Disney Just Confirmed ‘Zootopia 3’ Is Officially Happening – Here Are the Details & a First Look

Few animated franchises have built the kind of devoted fanbase that ‘Zootopia‘ has managed over the past decade. What started as a clever buddy-cop mystery between a rabbit and a fox has since ballooned into one of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ most successful and beloved properties.

That success only intensified after the release of ‘Zootopia 2’, which became the biggest Walt Disney Animation Studios release in history after grossing $1.86 billion worldwide. With numbers like that, speculation about a third installment felt less like a question of if and more a matter of when.

That question was finally answered at D23, where Disney officially confirmed ‘Zootopia 3’ is now in development at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Voice actors Ginnifer Goodwin, who plays Judy Hopps, and Ke Huy Quan, who plays Gary De’Snake, took the stage together to break the news, revealing the film’s title treatment alongside a major hint about where the story is headed next.

According to the announcement, ‘Zootopia 3’ will introduce birds into the franchise’s mammal-dominated world for the first time. Disney Animation’s official social media account teased the reveal with the line, “The world of Zootopia is about to go to the birds,” confirming what fans had been speculating about since the second film’s final moments.

That speculation traces back directly to ‘Zootopia 2’s post-credits scene, where a single feather gently landed on Judy Hopps’ windowsill, hinting that avian characters could soon be entering the picture. With Friday’s announcement, Disney has now made that teaser official, setting up an entirely new category of animal for the franchise to explore.

‘Zootopia’ director and Walt Disney Animation Studios chief creative officer Jared Bush personally made the announcement on stage at Anaheim’s Honda Center. Bush has previously discussed the realities of animated film production, noting that a feature typically takes four to five years to complete, which had fueled early estimates about how long fans might have to wait for a third entry.

The new film’s title logo was also revealed during the presentation, featuring the number three rendered entirely out of feathers, a clear visual nod to the franchise’s upcoming shift toward its avian cast. It’s a design choice that mirrors how ‘Zootopia 2’ visually teased its own expansion into reptilian characters like Quan’s Gary De’Snake.

Notably, Disney has not yet announced a release date or shared any additional plot details for ‘Zootopia 3’ beyond the bird reveal. That leaves plenty of room for fan theories to run wild in the meantime, especially given how significantly the franchise expanded its world and character roster between the first and second films.

Given the fast-tracked nature of this announcement, following relatively close on the heels of ‘Zootopia 2’s theatrical run, industry watchers expect fans won’t have to endure the same lengthy wait that separated the original ‘Zootopia’ from its 2016 debut and its eventual sequel nearly a decade later.
