Disney is reportedly working on a new Winnie the Pooh project, according to Daniel Richtman, who shared the information on his Patreon page.

Winnie the Pooh has been a beloved character for decades. The franchise is based on the stories by A. A. Milne and the illustrations by E. H. Shepard. Disney first brought Pooh to the big screen in 1966 with the short film Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree.

The series is known for its gentle tone and simple stories, which are designed to appeal mostly to preschool kids.

The history of Winnie the Pooh’s journey to Disney is interesting. In 1930, Stephen Slesinger bought the merchandising and TV rights for Pooh in the U.S. and Canada. Walt Disney showed interest in the Pooh stories as early as 1938 but didn’t get the rights until 1961. Disney then decided to make a short film rather than a full feature, and he gave Pooh his famous red shirt, which wasn’t in the original books. Over time, Disney added characters like Gopher to give Pooh a more American feel.

Over the years, there were some legal battles over the rights to Pooh. In 1991, the heirs of Stephen Slesinger accused Disney of not paying royalties properly and tried to reclaim some rights. Later, in 2009, a court ruled that Disney owned the trademarks and copyrights, but they still had to pay royalties.

By 2022, the original Winnie-the-Pooh book entered the public domain in the United States, which means anyone can now use the original stories there, although Disney still holds some rights to their versions and in other countries.

Winnie the Pooh is a huge success for Disney. According to a 2013 Variety report, it ranks as the third best-selling franchise worldwide, only behind Disney Princess and Star Wars. The New York Times noted that Pooh still brings in a huge amount of money despite sales dropping a little, saying, “Pooh remains Disney’s second best-selling character after Mickey Mouse.”

They also mentioned how difficult it is to keep an old character popular with kids while keeping parents happy. A marketing expert told them, “With Winnie the Pooh, Disney is going to continue to struggle with the tension of remaining relevant to kids versus maintaining a love-mark brand that parents trust.”

Winnie the Pooh has appeared in many films, starting with The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh in 1977, and more recently in Christopher Robin in 2018. There have also been numerous short films, TV series, and specials, keeping the character alive and loved by generations. Me & Winnie the Pooh animated series is currently still ongoing.

It’s unclear whether the project is a show or a series.

With this new project in the works, Disney seems eager to keep Pooh’s story going for years to come. Fans will have to wait for more news, but it’s clear that Winnie the Pooh remains an important part of Disney’s lineup.
