Shailene Woodley is not closing the door on returning to the Divergent universe. After author Veronica Roth announced a new book called The Sixth Faction, fans quickly started wondering if the franchise could make a comeback on the big screen. Now, Woodley has shared her thoughts on possibly stepping back into the role of Tris years after the original films ended.

Speaking with Variety, Woodley said she would actually be interested in exploring another movie connected to the Divergent series. She joked about the idea of returning later in life and said, “Maybe we’ll do it when I’m in my 40s.” The actress also laughed about the possibility of Tris returning as a mother, showing she still has affection for the character even after all these years.

Woodley also admitted she was excited to hear Roth had written another book in the Divergent world. She explained that she has not read The Sixth Faction yet, but she is happy to see the franchise continuing in some form. During the interview, she reflected on Tris’ story and the ending from the original books. “I think it would be fun to explore what a fourth film could be,” she said.

The actress also talked about one part of the original story she always found interesting as a performer. “Tris dies. That’s the plot point. I think it’s cool when a protagonist, when their world ends,” Woodley explained. It is clear she still appreciates the emotional and dramatic side of the character she played across the film series.

However, there is one major twist when it comes to The Sixth Faction. The new book is not a direct sequel to the original trilogy. Instead, it is described as an alternate-universe story where Tris chooses a completely different faction. That means the story could still center around Tris, but in a very different timeline and setting compared to the movies fans already know.

Even with Woodley showing interest, a new Divergent movie is far from confirmed. There are currently no announced plans for a film adaptation of The Sixth Faction. The franchise also has a complicated history in Hollywood. The first Divergent movie performed well at the box office, earning nearly $289 million worldwide. Its sequel did even better. But things changed with Allegiant in 2016, which made much less money and disappointed the studio.

Because of that poor box office result, Lionsgate canceled the planned final movie that was supposed to finish the story. Fans were left without a proper ending to the film series, and the franchise slowly faded away after that.

Still, some fans believe The Sixth Faction could give the series a fresh start. Since it is an alternate version of the story, it could work almost like a reboot for a new generation of viewers. At the same time, longtime fans would probably still want Woodley involved in some way because many people still connect her closely with Tris.

For now, nothing is official. But Woodley’s comments have definitely sparked fresh excitement among Divergent fans who never stopped hoping the franchise could someday return.
