Doctor Doom Glares Down Fans in Japan as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Statue Gets Its Closest Look Yet

Marvel Studios has spent months making sure Doctor Doom is impossible to avoid. With Robert Downey Jr. wearing the villain’s armor, the promotional push for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has spilled out of trailers and posters and into cinema lobbies, expos and city streets around the world.

That push has produced some eye-catching stops. A giant replica of Doom’s throne appeared at an expo in Shanghai and later traveled to the Philippines, a towering Doom statue was unveiled in the same Chinese city, and Argentina showed off a figure inside a glass case that glows green. One display even showed a life-size Doom statue without his hood, a first for the marketing tour.

Now Japan has delivered a fresh Doctor Doom statue, and a new close-up look shows how much detail went into it. The figure stands with its arms crossed in a hooded green cloak and a battered metal mask. A thick chain sits across its chest, round emblem plates cover the shoulders, and the whole thing stands on a base marked with a circular, glowing pattern.

The display sits in front of a green-lit panel carrying the Japanese ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ logo, which makes the whole setup feel like a stage set for the villain. Fans who stop by can photograph the figure from the front or step in for a shot beside those armored shoulders. The close-up angle also makes the surface texture easy to read, from the scuffed metal of the mask to the stitching on the cape.

It is the latest in a run of Doom sightings in the country. A statue debuted in the lobby of 109 Cinemas Osaka Expo City as part of a special decoration event themed around the eve of the film’s arrival. Another, much larger Doom, seated on a throne, was photographed beside a modern building in early November.

Japan has also given the character a parade. Central Tokyo hosted a procession led by a giant Doom float roughly 4.5 meters tall and weighing about 1.5 tons. Around 60 cloaked members of the so-called Doom Corps followed behind, carrying Avengers flags.

The attention makes sense given how the studio has treated this market. At a Hero’s Day event in Tokyo earlier this year, Marvel confirmed that ‘Avengers: Endgame’ would return to Japanese theaters ahead of the new film. The same event confirmed that ‘Doomsday’ would open in Japan on the same day as its US release, a notable shift from earlier MCU entries. Walt Disney Japan is handling distribution.

The campaign has even reached the voice booth. Tomoyuki Morikawa has been cast as the Japanese voice of Doom, and Downey announced the news himself in a promo video for fans. The late Keiji Fujiwara voiced Tony Stark in 11 earlier MCU movies, so the casting carries some emotional weight for longtime viewers.

The film itself arrives on December 18 and is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. It pits the Avengers, the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers and the X-Men against Downey’s Victor von Doom. It is also the first Avengers movie in theaters in 7 years, since ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Marvel released the first official trailer in July, and select premium-format tickets have already gone on sale. The studio is clearly betting on spectacle, and the statues are a big part of that bet. A story that continues in ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ on December 17, 2027, gives the studio every reason to make this first chapter feel enormous.

Fans who can’t travel to Japan have another way to bring Doom home. Iron Studios and Sideshow have released a 1:10 scale ‘Doctor Doom on Throne’ statue priced at $249.99, along with a larger 1:4 scale Legacy Replica and a life-sized piece. For now, though, nothing quite matches seeing the villain loom over a crowd in person.
