The good news for fans of the wild dragon is that the story does not end there. Sheepstealer does not die in House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 7, even though Rhaenyra and Addam of Hull track down Daemon and Rhaena in the Vale and the confrontation gets extremely violent.
Sheepstealer’s Brutal Fight in the Vale
Caraxes, Syrax, and Seasmoke corner the wild dragon in a brutal three on one fight after Daemon and Rhaena are tracked down. Sheepstealer initially attacks Syrax before Seasmoke and Caraxes join the brawl, and Caraxes sinks his jaws into Sheepstealer’s neck and delivers near fatal bites.
As Addam and Rhaenyra fled with Rhaena as their captive, Daemon was ordered to stay behind, and he ordered his dragon, Caraxes, to kill Sheepstealer. The episode goes out of its way to make viewers believe Sheepstealer is finished for several tense minutes, and the fight is easily the show’s most punishing dragon on dragon violence yet.
Despite the ferocity of the attack, the show ultimately pulls back from finishing the wild dragon off completely. Daemon ultimately holds his dragon back from delivering the killing blow, and Sheepstealer crawls away badly wounded and unable to fly after the encounter. What the Book ‘Fire and Blood’ Says About Sheepstealer’s Fate
Anyone hoping the source material will spoil what happens next is going to be disappointed, because George R.R. Martin never settled the matter. There are no reports of Sheepstealer dying in the books, and by the time the events of Game of Thrones roll around, Sheepstealer is most likely dead, but Martin never confirmed the dragon’s fate in any of his books.
The show has also reshaped who actually rides the dragon compared to the novel. In the book, Sheepstealer’s rider is Nettles rather than Rhaena, and the two of them are last seen together flying toward the Bay of Crabs after Rhaenyra, gripped by paranoia, orders Nettles killed for treachery.
A later account describes Nettles and Sheepstealer being spotted years afterward in a cave in the Mountains of the Moon during the reign of Aegon III, after which the pair vanish from the historical record entirely.
This gives ‘House of the Dragon’ an opening to do whatever it wants with the dragon and Rhaena, especially since the series continues to merge Nettles’ character arc with Rhaena’s own storyline. Because the book leaves so much unresolved, the show has room to either mirror that ambiguous ending or invent something entirely new for its finale.

With only the finale remaining in Season 3, the door is wide open for how this thread gets resolved. Sheepstealer’s fate leaves fans with big questions, and while the outcome looked grim in the moment, the episode stops short of confirming the dragon’s death, opening the door for plenty of speculation.
