Sheepstealer Didn’t Kill Moondancer in ‘House of the Dragon’ — But the Chain of Chaos It Caused Is Just as Devastating

House of the Dragon‘ Season 3 wasted absolutely no time plunging viewers into catastrophe. The premiere episode opened with one of the most anticipated events in the entire Dance of the Dragons saga, and it delivered the kind of gut-punch that the series has always promised it was capable of.

The question on every fan’s lips after that episode aired was whether Sheepstealer killed Moondancer at the Battle of the Gullet. The short answer is no. But the fuller story of what Rhaena Targaryen’s untamed dragon actually set in motion is far more heartbreaking than a simple yes or no could ever capture.

Sheepstealer’s Attack on Moondancer at the Battle of the Gullet

Sheepstealer began attacking Vermax and Moondancer during the battle despite Rhaena begging him to leave them be, before ultimately flying away. Moondancer, ridden by Baela Targaryen, was targeted by the out-of-control wild dragon, but she survived the encounter. Moondancer and Baela surveyed the devastating battlefield as Sheepstealer flew Rhaena away from the battle when the episode cut to black.

In other words, the sisterly bond between Rhaena and Baela was nearly severed from the sky itself. Sheepstealer lashed out at nearby forces, creating confusion among allies and eventually chasing Moondancer, and at that moment, Rhaena understood something terrifying: the rider her dragon was threatening was her own sister.

Rhaena Targaryen and Her Wild Dragon’s Destructive Unpredictability

Sheepstealer proves his unpredictability at the worst moment possible and starts attacking his ally Moondancer and its rider Baela, unaware that they are fighting for the same side. This is not a dragon making a battlefield calculation. It is an animal acting entirely on instinct, indifferent to human allegiances or family ties.

Rhaena is unable to control Sheepstealer, who attacks members of their own side. Controlling a dragon is not an exact science, and what we know is that they are ferocious, protective, and territorial, and even more dangerous if they are wild and not used to having a rider.

Rhaena had no chance of stopping him, as she is an extremely inexperienced rider, and while Sheepstealer has allowed her to ride him, that does not mean she is the one in charge.

Rhaena and Sheepstealer swept into the action, the dragon skimming along the water as Rhaena held on without the benefit of a saddle or riding leathers or anything other than the extreme fear of plummeting to her death. When Rhaena ordered the creature to attack the enemy, it just started unleashing flames at any target it saw, including Rhaenyra’s own forces.

Why Sheepstealer Went Berserk While Moondancer and Vermax Held Formation

The contrast between the trained dragons and Sheepstealer could not have been more dramatic, and showrunner Ryan Condal addressed it directly. According to Condal, Moondancer and Vermax had been trained all their lives for battle. They had been around other dragons, whereas Sheepstealer had just been a solitary dragon for his whole life. When thrown into a battle, he was going to have a reaction to it.

Rhaena Finally Got Her Dragon Sheepstealer in ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 3 and It Cost Everything

Sheepstealer was introduced in ‘HOTD’ Season 2 as a riderless dragon living and hunting alone, away from other dragons and humans. Sheepstealer is not trained to accompany humans and obey their commands, and many people have failed to tame the dragon in the past. Rhaena’s bond with him, while real and hard-won, was simply too new and too fragile to hold under the extreme conditions of a full naval battle.

Condal addressed the emotional shift directly, saying that while it starts as Rhaena’s dream of riding her dragon into battle, Sheepstealer lashes out to defend himself and his rider, and there are no higher stakes than being responsible for hurting your own family.

How Sheepstealer’s Attack on Moondancer Led to Jace’s Death

The true devastation of Sheepstealer’s rampage is not what happened to Moondancer, but the cascade of consequences it triggered. Baela pursued Sheepstealer on Moondancer, while Jace and Vermax moved to defend her. For a moment, the dragonriders did not seem to understand who they were fighting, and Jace ordered Vermax to kill the other rider before realizing it was Rhaena on Sheepstealer.

Jace might have lived had he not noticed that the dragon rider attacking him was Rhaena. He ordered Vermax to pull back at the last moment, sparing Rhaena and Sheepstealer from a deadly strike. However, his focus on this third dragon left him vulnerable to the enemy’s attack. Vermax was hit by a harpoon weapon and dragged under the surface, drowning. Jace pulled himself onto some debris, but was hit by an arrow in the back by an unseen archer. Two further arrows hit Jace in the chest and neck, killing Rhaenyra’s eldest son.

What the Season 3 Premiere Means for Rhaena’s Arc Going Forward

The emotional fallout for Rhaena is enormous. After spending the majority of Season 2 caring for the younger sons of Rhaenyra and lamenting her status as a dragonless Targaryen, Rhaena spotted an opportunity to change her fate by claiming the wild dragon Sheepstealer, and in the Season 3 premiere, she capitalized on it.

In George R.R. Martin’s ‘Fire and Blood,’ it is not Rhaena who claims Sheepstealer, but rather a girl named Nettles, a sixteen-year-old bastard who is one of the dragonseeds. Nettles has been cut from the show completely, seemingly as a means of streamlining things and giving Rhaena an increased role in events.

Rhaenyra was moments away from claiming the Iron Throne with far less effort and bloodshed than she could have imagined. Now, her son and heir is dead, and the Sea Snake’s fleet is reduced by nearly thirty percent. Rhaena did not set out to cause any of this, and that is precisely what makes it so tragic. She wanted to protect her family, and instead she became an unwitting instrument of its devastation.

Moondancer and Baela survived the Battle of the Gullet, but the question that will haunt the rest of Season 3 is whether Rhaena and Sheepstealer can ever become a force of genuine control rather than chaos — and if Baela will ever truly be able to look at her sister the same way again after watching that wild dragon come for her in the smoke and fire above the Gullet.
