Fans of the cozy Canadian drama ‘Sullivan’s Crossing‘ have been holding their breath over one question since nearly the very beginning of the series. Does Sully actually lose the beloved campground that sits at the heart of everything, or does he manage to hold on to his family’s legacy against the forces working against him?

The short answer is that Sully never truly loses ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ outright, but the road to keeping it has been anything but smooth. Three full seasons of financial crises, villainous developers, and personal upheaval have made the fate of that campground one of the most suspenseful ongoing threads in the show’s run.

Sully’s Fight to Save the Campground in Season 2

The main threat of season 2 was unscrupulous real estate developer Glenn attempting to buy ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ at auction. Sully had fallen behind on payments, and at a crucial moment when he needed to send paperwork and negotiate with the bank, he was hospitalized. As it turned out, his drinking had depleted his vitamin B1 levels due to alcoholism. Though Sully recovered, the damage was done and the Crossing was put up for auction.

However, the community rallied to donate money to save the camp, and when Glenn’s aide failed to make it back to the auction house on time with the full amount, the sale defaulted back to Sully and Maggie. It was a breathless close call that left the Crossing in family hands, but with the financial footing far from secure.

Even though the season 2 finale was a triumphant victory for the Sullivan family when they saved the campground, it wasn’t without a frightening cliffhanger. When the diner caught fire, Sully was last seen trapped within, and the episode ended without showing whether he survived.

Sully Survives the Fire and Faces a New Development Threat in Season 3

Since the season 2 finale, fans were worried about Sully’s fate, and the first episode of season 3 reveals that Sully did survive the fire and is alive. The third season traces his struggles with his mental and physical health following the fire and shows the kinds of positive changes his character is going through.

It has been difficult enough for Sully to manage the changes Edna made to how they run the campground, and those troubles are compounded when their new online booking system crashes. This puts him in hot water with Helen, a bestselling romance author who he accidentally booked into an already-reserved cabin.

The problems do not stop for Sully, as he learns that Glenn Perry, his sworn rival, has kicked off a luxury resort project right next to ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ in an attempt to harm the business. Enraged, Sully tries to fight Perry over his actions but realizes that he has no legal footing to do so. The threat from Glenn is personal, calculated, and very deliberate, framed as retaliation for Sully not rolling over in previous seasons.

After nearly losing the Crossing in a foreclosure auction the previous season, Sully and his ragtag team quickly come to its rescue again. The campground is his family’s legacy and, in turn, Maggie’s legacy. Both the first and second seasons touched on the imminent threat of the Crossing getting into the wrong hands, and this third season saw a huge hiccup with this recurring storyline.

Maggie’s Role in Protecting the Family Legacy

For Maggie, the stress of nearly losing her dad was too much to bear, causing her to suffer a miscarriage. Now a permanent resident of Timberlake, Maggie helps Sully and his new partners Frank and Edna with modernizing the family business. The work at ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ keeps her busy, but grief continues to creep in when she least expects it.

The storyline with Glenn threatening to develop land and destroy the Crossing’s business was cleared up a few episodes into season 3, clearing a path for the final two episodes to focus on romantic drama and Edna’s health scare. That resolution meant the campground itself was no longer under immediate siege by the time the finale arrived.

Maggie finally realized that what she really wants is simply to be a doctor and help people. Her epiphany led her to realize she could have both of her loves in Timberlake: Cal and being a doctor, putting to rest a three-season-long question. With Maggie choosing to stay and plant roots, the future of the Crossing looks more stable than it has at any point in the series.

Sully Leaves for Ireland, and What It Means for Season 4

In the season 3 finale, Sully tells Maggie he is heading to Ireland with Helen, who is meeting with producers about adapting her novel into a television series. Maggie asks what this means for ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’, and he tells her he will always love it and nothing, not even Ireland, can change that.

At the campground’s new restaurant opening, Sully tells Maggie he is going to Ireland with Helen, finally embarking on a new chapter now that he knows ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ will be well looked after, including by her. The handover of responsibility to Maggie feels earned after three seasons of her choosing the Crossing over her former life.

Showrunner Roma Roth confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Scott Patterson will not return for season 4. The character departed for Ireland during the season 3 finale, and while Sully is not being written out of the show’s universe entirely, he will not appear on screen during the new season. Roth clarified that the story resumes the very next day after Sully leaves to start a new phase of his life overseas.

TVLine noted that it is an extended trip and observed that there is no ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ without Sully, suggesting a time jump could bring him back sooner than expected. For now, the campground remains in Sullivan hands, the family legacy intact, even if its namesake patriarch is thousands of miles away.

With Maggie holding down the fort and season 4 already in the works, the big question is whether Sully’s absence changes the soul of the show, or whether the Crossing has finally grown strong enough to stand on its own without him, so share your thoughts below on whether you think ‘Sullivan’s Crossing’ can thrive without Sully in the picture.
