Domestic Presales for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Keep Climbing, and the Latest Milestone Is a Big One
This year has already reset expectations for superhero box office. ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ opened on July 31 to $360,091,572 domestically, displacing ‘Avengers: Endgame’s $357.1 million as the biggest opening weekend of all time. Every Marvel tentpole that follows is now measured against that number.
‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ has been chasing that standard since tickets first went on sale. Premium-format sales opened July 20, and the film pulled in $16.5 million on its first day across roughly 1,000 theaters. General sales then opened at every cinema about 4 months before release, and 2 days later the film was reportedly running about 65% ahead of ‘Brand New Day’s pace.
Now the domestic total has reportedly reached another milestone. According to tracking firm Global Box Office, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has crossed $65 million in domestic presales, with about 50 days left before its December 18 release. The figure comes from a tracker rather than the studio, and the account has had its estimates questioned in the past.
The climb has been steady. Disney’s CFO said at an investor conference that the film had passed $50 million in domestic presales with roughly 100 days to go, and about 70% of that was tied to the new Infinity Vision premium format. Before that, it became the first film ever to pass $40 million in North American presales around the 100-day mark.
By comparison, ‘Brand New Day’ did not cross $40 million until roughly 40 days before its opening. Tracker updates put ‘Doomsday’ at $55 million with about 3 months remaining, and the new $65 million figure continues that trend. Reports of worldwide presales have also passed $125 million, helped by record starts in Brazil and the UK and a record 118,000-ticket first day in Germany.

The ultimate benchmarks are higher. ‘Brand New Day’ reportedly reached about $150 million in pre-release sales by the Thursday before its opening, followed by ‘Avengers: Endgame’ at $130 million in 2019 and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ at $78 million. The only domestic figure Disney has confirmed is the $50 million mark, so $65 million remains an unofficial estimate.
Opening weekend projections reflect that gap. Global Box Office has projected a domestic debut between $260 million and $300 million, below the $357.1 million of ‘Endgame’ and the $360 million of ‘Brand New Day’. Some insiders have speculated about bigger numbers, and a tracker on the BoxOfficeTheory forums suggested preview grosses could reach $60 million to $70 million, near the $72 million ‘Brand New Day’ collected from its preview screenings.
There is an important caveat. ‘Doomsday’ has had far more time to sell tickets, since ‘Brand New Day’ only began selling about 45 days out. No major blockbuster has opened presales this early, so there is no direct comparison. As one analysis noted, early presales measure interest rather than the final result.
Format availability also matters. Because ‘Dune: Part Three’ holds the full US IMAX footprint for 3 weeks, ‘Doomsday’ leans on Infinity Vision, Dolby and other premium formats instead. Disney has pointed to films such as ‘Barbie’ that crossed $1 billion without IMAX support, and the company plans to push formats like Dolby, D-Box and 4DX.

The next 50 days will show whether the pace holds. The heaviest buying window typically comes close to release, so the totals could rise quickly as marketing intensifies. New trailers, TV spots and promotional tie-ins keep arriving almost daily, and a Chinese opening on December 16 will add another early read on demand.
The film features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, with the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four facing a threat from 3 colliding universes. It opens on the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three’, a matchup fans call Dunesday. For now, the presale curve suggests demand is real, even if the finish line is still far away.
Can ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ break the record for the biggest domestic opening weekend?
