Doom Takes the Throne: New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Ticket Art Turns Moviegoing Into a Villain’s Coronation

Marvel’s marketing machine has never been shy about making a big movie feel like an event, and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ is pushing that instinct further than most. Between record presales, collectible popcorn buckets and a villain-centered ad campaign, the film has been selling itself as a coronation for its new antagonist. The latest piece of that puzzle is a striking new piece of art attached to a cinema chain ticket.

Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., has been the face of the campaign since the film’s casting was announced in July 2024. The Russo brothers are returning to direct, and the movie is billed as a multi-universe crossover bringing together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the original X-Men. It is scheduled for release on December 18.

The newly surfaced art is soaked in green and built around a single, imposing image of Doom. The villain sits on a throne at the top of a stairway, flanked by glowing beams of light, with the cracked, metallic letters of the word DOOM stretched across the top. The film’s logo sits at the bottom of the frame.

Around the central figure, a ring of dark silhouettes with glowing green eyes surrounds the throne, creating the feel of a villain holding court. It’s a very different tone from the usual heroic team poses that fans associate with the franchise. Instead, the focus is entirely on the antagonist, which matches how the studio has been positioning the movie.

The artwork fits neatly into a broader pattern. Cinemark revealed a collector’s popcorn bucket sculpted as Doom’s hooded metal mask with glowing green eyes, along with a drink cup showing him on a stone throne carved with geometric symbols. The Avengers and Fantastic Four logos are embossed above him, and translucent green parts and a green straw complete the look.

Regal has promotions of its own, including collectible 3D glasses for a December 20 RealD 3D fan event. Each guest receives a pair with one of five mystery logos, representing the Avengers, Black Panther, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four or Doom himself. Regal Rewards members can also get an exclusive Magic: The Gathering card when they see the film opening weekend in Infinity Vision.

Beyond theaters, the collectibles market is heating up too. Hot Toys has unveiled a Doom figure in a dark green tunic and hooded cloak with posable wire, translucent green flame effects and crackling hands, limited to 3,000 units in select markets. A new Heroes & Villains collection at New York Comic Con also leans on Latveria-themed gear, including a varsity jacket and backpack with Doom’s face.

Disney is reportedly planning a Dunkin’ takeover in November as well. All of it points to a studio determined to make the green-cloaked villain the face of the season. For a franchise built on heroes, that is a notable change of emphasis.

The demand behind all this merchandise is showing up in ticket sales. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ tickets went on sale on July 20, initially only for premium formats at about 1,000 theaters under Disney’s new Infinity Vision branding. The film pulled in $16.5M in its first day of limited presales.

By early September, it had become the earliest movie to earn more than $50M in domestic presales three months before release. When full advance sales opened around four months out, reports said they were running 65% ahead of the first 2 days of presales for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The film’s trailer is also described as Disney’s most-viewed ever.

The film does face one big obstacle. It shares its December 18 release date with ‘Dune: Part Three’, which secured a 3-week exclusive window on IMAX screens. That is why Disney created the Infinity Vision label in the first place, and why a ticket stub or a collectible has become part of the sales pitch.

Reports put the runtime at about 165 minutes, which would make it one of the longest Marvel films ever. The sequel, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’, is set for December 17, 2027. With so much riding on the opening, every extra piece of art or merchandise helps keep the film in front of people.

The decision to center the artwork on Doom tells its own story. The studio is leaning on the novelty of Downey’s return, this time on the villain’s side of the fight, as the main hook for the film. His green cloak and metal mask have become the film’s most recognizable images, and each new release builds on that look.

Whether the final film lives up to the hype is still unknown, but the visuals are doing their job. A single ticket design might seem like a small piece of the campaign. In this case, it captures how the studio wants audiences to feel when they walk into the theater: that they are about to meet a king.
