‘The Odyssey’ has already turned into one of the year’s biggest theatrical events, driven largely by Christopher Nolan’s insistence on shooting the entire film with IMAX cameras and the scarcity of theaters capable of projecting true 70mm prints. That scarcity has made securing a ticket to the format feel like its own kind of achievement, with fans traveling across state lines just to see the film the way Nolan intended.

Warner Bros. and Legendary appear to have taken notice of that momentum, and they are now using it to their own advantage ahead of one of the biggest releases still to come this year. ‘Dune Part Three’, Denis Villeneuve’s closing chapter in his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s saga, has been building its own wave of anticipation since debuting its latest trailer at a global IMAX fan event on July 8.

Warner Bros. reported that exclusive footage from ‘Dune Part Three’ will be attached to IMAX 70mm screenings of ‘The Odyssey’. Villeneuve revealed the tie-in himself during the trailer event, noting that at least a glimpse of an intense battle sequence from the upcoming film would run ahead of ‘The Odyssey’ once its IMAX showings began.

The footage in question is the same extended sequence Villeneuve first showed to audiences at CinemaCon back in April, though presented this time in full IMAX 70mm rather than the format used at the earlier event. Villeneuve described the scene as one that reveals the consequences of Paul Atreides’ choices from ‘Dune Part Two’, giving audiences a preview of the darker, more consequence-driven tone the third film is expected to carry.

‘Dune Part Three’ is adapted from Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel ‘Dune Messiah’ and picks up nearly two decades after Paul, played by Timothee Chalamet, seized control of the Imperium. The film finds him ruling as an increasingly ruthless emperor while a sweeping conspiracy forms against him, with Zendaya returning as Chani alongside Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan and a cast that also includes Jason Momoa, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Robert Pattinson.

The cross-promotion marks an unusually aggressive marketing push for a film still five months away from release, and it comes with a bit of added symmetry given Zendaya’s presence in both projects, appearing as Athena in ‘The Odyssey’ and as Chani in ‘Dune Part Three’. Villeneuve also used the trailer event to reveal that he had assembled a small team of two filmmakers tasked specifically with creating experimental footage for the new movie, adding another layer of intrigue to what audiences can expect once the film premieres in full.

The trailer itself premiered globally on July 8 as part of a simulcast event spanning eight cities, including Los Angeles, London, Toronto, and Abu Dhabi, underscoring just how far Warner Bros. and Legendary are willing to go to build anticipation for the trilogy’s conclusion months ahead of its actual release.

‘Dune Part Three’ is scheduled to open in theaters and IMAX on December 18, the same day as Marvel’s ‘Avengers Doomsday’, setting up a heavily contested holiday release date between the two films. Notably, Warner Bros. and Legendary have marketed the film with the specific phrase only in theaters and IMAX, a pointed distinction given that ‘Avengers Doomsday’ is not expected to carry the IMAX branding on that same date.

Would exclusive ‘Dune: Part Three’ footage convince you to watch ‘The Odyssey’ in IMAX 70mm?

‘The Odyssey’ opens in theaters on July 17, following preview screenings the night before, with Nolan’s film continuing its exclusive access to IMAX screens in the weeks ahead.
