‘Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ Sequel Gets a Massive Update From the Directors

Three years after Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrived in theaters, fans finally have a clearer idea of what is happening with a possible sequel. While a second movie has not officially moved forward, director Jonathan Goldstein has confirmed that the story already exists in script form.

During an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Goldstein revealed that he and his writing team were hired to create a sequel screenplay for the fantasy adventure film. However, he admitted that the project’s future is still uncertain because of the high cost involved in making a large-scale fantasy movie.

“We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons and Dragons. We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it,” Goldstein explained.

The filmmaker also shared that he still has a lot of love for the original cast and believes the sequel script is something fans would enjoy. “We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like,” he added.

The first movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, was released on March 31, 2023. The film was praised by critics and audiences for its humor, characters, and approach to adapting the famous tabletop role-playing game. However, its box office performance did not match expectations, earning around $205 million worldwide.

The movie faced tough competition during its theatrical run, arriving between major releases like John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Despite strong reviews, including a 91% critics score and a 92% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, the film struggled to become the major franchise starter that Paramount had hoped for.

Goldstein and co-director John Francis Daley created a fantasy adventure centered around a group of unlikely heroes led by Edgin, played by Chris Pine, and Holga, played by Michelle Rodriguez. The cast also included Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Justice Smith, Hugh Grant, Chloe Coleman, Jason Wong, and Bradley Cooper.

The film followed Edgin and Holga as they escaped from prison and searched for a magical relic while facing powerful enemies across the Forgotten Realms. Its success with fans helped build interest in continuing the story, even if the financial results made a sequel more complicated.

The future of the franchise has become even more uncertain after major changes at Paramount. Previous studio executives expressed interest in making another film but suggested that the budget would need to be reduced. With Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros., it remains unclear how the company plans to handle the future of the Dungeons & Dragons brand on the big screen.

The franchise may still continue in another format. A television adaptation set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons was previously in development before Paramount moved away from the project. Netflix later picked up the series under the title The Forgotten Realms, with Drew Crevello attached as writer, showrunner, and executive producer.

For now, fans have a completed sequel script but no official confirmation that cameras will begin rolling. Goldstein’s comments suggest that the creative team is ready to return, but the decision will likely depend on whether the studios believe another expensive fantasy adventure is worth the investment.

After the success of the first film with audiences and critics, many fans are still hoping the adventures of this party of heroes will continue. For now, the sequel remains stuck between possibility and uncertainty.
