When the Marvel Cinematic Universe first started, Marvel Studios had rights to only some of the heroes that we’ve met on Marvel Comics pages. The studio did a great job with the Avengers but couldn’t count on Fantastic Four, X-Men, and Deadpool to join the franchise until Disney purchased Fox in 2019. Sony, which held the rights to Spider-Man and characters related to him, made a deal with Disney that put Spider-Man in the MCU, but they didn’t want to give those rights fully; Sony wanted to create its own cinematic universe based on Marvel characters.
That idea resulted in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU), which so far spawned two Venom movies starring Tom Hardy and the Morbius movie starring Jared Leto. While Venom movies were met with mixed reception, Morbius received very negative reviews, and it was a box office bomb. Still, Sony announced that they aren’t planning to stop with their own Marvel franchise. So now, we can expect Kraven the Hunter, Madame Web, Venom 3, and El Muerto.
DanielRPK, who is known for providing rumored updates on Marvel movies that are in development, recently shared on Reddit that the upcoming El Muerto movie is reportedly set to begin production this Fall in Los Angeles. Ever since the movie was announced, there haven’t been any updates on the production, but if this one is true, that means that the movie definitely will not be finished before its planned release date — January 12, 2024. So, expect some delays.
The El Muerto movie was announced at Sony’s panel at CinemaCon in April 2022, with Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, set to star. Jonás Cuarón, who wrote and directed the recent Netflix movie Chupa, was hired to direct Chupa. Why did Sony choose this character to give him a solo movie out of all the characters they have rights to? It’s unknown.
The next movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, Kraven the Hunter, is set to be released on October 6, 2023. Avengers: Age of Ultron star Aaron Taylor-Johnson plays the main role, and J. C. Chandor is the director.
