Elijah Wood Breaks Silence on Leaked ‘Lord of the Rings: Hunt for Gollum’ Plot Details
Elijah Wood has added new fuel to the ongoing discussion about The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum after comments he made at Fan Expo Vancouver.
The movie, directed by Andy Serkis, was officially announced earlier and is currently scheduled for release in December 2027 after being delayed from its original timeline. While the studio has kept most story details secret, a leak has been circulating online claiming the film will focus on Gollum’s journey after the One Ring changes hands, and even touch on earlier parts of his life as Smeagol.
According to the leaked synopsis, the story follows Gollum after he leaves his cave in search of the Ring once again, setting off a chain of events that pulls in other characters from Middle-earth. It also suggests that parts of the film will explore Smeagol before his transformation, showing more of his human side and how he eventually becomes the creature known as Gollum.
During the Fan Expo panel, Elijah Wood responded to a question about whether he could confirm anything about the film or its direction. As reported by The Direct, Wood did not dismiss the leak. Instead, he acknowledged it in a way that strongly suggests the information may be accurate.
He said, “I feel like just [recently], someone articulated what the premise of the film is… Like, the actual logline of the movie and in more detail. So, that’s cool. It’s out there in the world.” He went on to describe the story as following Gollum and also showing parts of Smeagol’s past, explaining more about where he came from and how his connection to the Ring shapes everything that follows.
Wood also mentioned how the story ties into the wider timeline of The Lord of the Rings, including the involvement of Rangers tracking Gollum. His comments line up with earlier reports that Aragorn could play a role in the hunt, working to stop Gollum from revealing dangerous information about the Ring’s location and its connection to the Shire.
One of the key points from Wood’s statement is the focus on Gollum as a central character, rather than just a supporting figure. The film appears to explore his inner conflict, his past as Smeagol, and the way he becomes tied to both Sauron’s search and the fate of the Ring itself. This gives the story a more character-driven angle, while still staying connected to the larger events leading into The Fellowship of the Ring.
The film is set to bring back several familiar names, including Andy Serkis as Gollum, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Lee Pace as Thranduil. Other casting details are still developing, but the project is already drawing attention due to its connection to the original trilogy timeline and the return of key creative figures behind the franchise.
While nothing has been officially confirmed by the studio regarding the leak, Elijah Wood’s comments have made fans more confident that the reported storyline is close to what will appear on screen. As of now, The Hunt for Gollum remains one of the most anticipated upcoming entries in the Lord of the Rings universe, especially with its promise to explore one of the saga’s most tragic and complex characters in greater depth.
