Rhaenyra Targaryen has fought for the Iron Throne for years, but in House of the Dragon Season 3, she faces a loss that leaves her completely broken. For Emma D’Arcy, the actor behind Rhaenyra, the character’s reaction to losing her son Jace is one of the most painful moments she has ever played.

In Season 3 Episode 2, Rhaenyra learns that her firstborn son and heir, Jacaerys Velaryon, has died during the Battle of the Gullet. While viewers already knew about Jace’s fate, the moment is completely new for Rhaenyra, who struggles to accept that her son is gone.

Speaking with Variety, D’Arcy explained that Rhaenyra’s grief comes from a place of complete disbelief. The loss is so painful that she cannot immediately understand or accept what has happened. “I think the truth is, for Rhaenyra, it’s an insurmountable loss, and it’s a reality that is too terrible to reckon with,” D’Arcy said.

The actor explained that Rhaenyra’s first response is denial. Instead of accepting the tragedy, she tries to fight against the reality in front of her by desperately reaching out to Jace. “So the first feeling, the first instinct, is sort of utter denial and to try to push back against that dawning terrible reality,” D’Arcy added.

For D’Arcy, filming the scene was one of the hardest parts of the season. The actor revealed that there was one moment they were especially nervous about shooting because it required Rhaenyra to experience a level of grief that goes beyond normal heartbreak.

“There’s only one scene that I dreaded shooting this season, and it was that moment when Rhaenyra breaks with reality by trying to engage with Jace’s corpse,” D’Arcy explained. The emotional weight of the scene was also connected to the real bond between the actors. D’Arcy praised Harry Collett, who plays Jace, for the way he handled the difficult moment on set.

According to D’Arcy, Collett gave them space before filming but was still supportive when needed. “He was totally beautiful that day,” D’Arcy said. The actor explained that Collett approached them later and said, “I just thought I’d give you that space, but I’m also here if you want anything.”

Rhaenyra’s grief becomes the turning point that pushes her into action. After losing Jace, she decides she can no longer wait and moves forward with her plan to take King’s Landing alongside Daemon.

However, D’Arcy believes the pain of losing Jace will stay with Rhaenyra even after she takes the Iron Throne. The victory does not feel like a triumph because it comes after losing the person who was supposed to inherit everything after her.

The actor also explained that Rhaenyra’s grief affects how she sees herself. The woman who wanted to be a strong queen is forced to confront a much more vulnerable side of herself.

For Rhaenyra, becoming ruler means carrying unimaginable pain. Emma D’Arcy’s comments show that Jace’s death is not just another tragedy in the Targaryen war. It is a moment that changes Rhaenyra forever and shapes every decision she makes afterward.
