Rhaenyra’s ‘House of the Dragon’ Throne Moment Wasn’t a Victory – Emma D’Arcy Reveals What She Really Felt
Rhaenyra Targaryen finally gets the power she has spent years fighting for in House of the Dragon Season 3, but according to Emma D’Arcy, the moment is far from a victory. Instead, it is a painful reminder of everything Rhaenyra has lost along the way.
Following the events of Season 3 Episode 2, Rhaenyra takes control of King’s Landing after making a difficult choice that changes her relationship with Alicent Hightower forever. While she has finally reached the Iron Throne, the cost of getting there leaves her emotionally damaged.
In an interview about the episode, D’Arcy explained that Rhaenyra’s rise to power was meant to show someone who had been pushed beyond her limits. The actor wanted the character to lose the confidence and maturity she had built over the years by the time she finally sat on the throne.
“I wanted Rhaenyra to be stripped of her adulthood by the time she reaches the throne,” D’Arcy said.
The moment that affects Rhaenyra the most is her decision to execute Otto Hightower. Otto was not just Alicent’s father; he was also someone who had known Rhaenyra since she was a child and had been close to her late father, King Viserys. For Rhaenyra, killing Otto is not just a political move. It forces her to confront her past and the person she used to be before the war destroyed her relationships.
D’Arcy explained that Rhaenyra struggles because Otto represents a connection to her childhood, making it difficult for her to fully act like a powerful ruler. “When someone has known you from your childhood, I think it’s very hard to retain the jacket of your adult self,” D’Arcy said.
The actor also pointed out that Rhaenyra’s meeting with Alicent after the execution is one of the most important emotional moments of the episode. Seeing Alicent’s reaction forces Rhaenyra to look at herself through the eyes of someone who knew her before the war began.

“When she sees herself via Alicent’s POV, there’s something of the two of them being children,” D’Arcy explained. The scene shows that despite everything that has happened, Rhaenyra and Alicent still have a deep connection. They are not just enemies fighting for power. They are two people who grew up together and lost the friendship they once had.
However, D’Arcy believes that Rhaenyra’s decision may have created damage that cannot easily be repaired. “It’s probably immediately evident that Rhaenyra’s action is probably insurmountable in their relationship,” the actor said.
Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent, also shared her thoughts on the scene and explained that Alicent sees Otto’s death as a personal betrayal. From Alicent’s perspective, Rhaenyra’s first act as ruler was taking away someone she loved.
The tragedy of the moment is that both women believe they are doing what they must. Rhaenyra is trying to secure her claim, while Alicent believes she is protecting her family.
For D’Arcy, the Iron Throne is not a symbol of success for Rhaenyra. It is a reminder of the sacrifices she has made and the people she has lost.
After years of fighting for the crown, Rhaenyra finally gets what she wanted. But as Emma D’Arcy’s comments suggest, becoming queen may have cost her the part of herself she was trying to protect all along.
