Streaming renewals rarely come with much fanfare, but every so often a show’s numbers make it impossible to ignore. Emmy Rossum’s crime thriller has spent the past several weeks quietly building exactly that kind of undeniable momentum on Hulu.

Furious‘ premiered on July 27 with a hybrid release strategy, dropping three episodes at once before shifting to weekly installments through its August 31 finale. That approach paid off almost immediately, with the show cracking the Top 10 in streaming originals during its very first week, entering at No. 10 with 372 million minutes watched, according to Deadline.

That early success has only continued climbing. Disney confirmed ‘Furious’ has cleared 43 million hours watched since its premiere, translating to roughly 6.2 million estimated views, a figure calculated by dividing total time watched by runtime, according to Variety.

Perhaps the most striking detail in Disney’s latest report is how the show’s finale performed compared to its debut. The Season 1 finale saw 90% more views after one day of availability than the premiere episode did, a clear signal of strong word-of-mouth momentum building throughout the season rather than fading, according to Variety.

That kind of growth is notably rare for a freshman series, especially one that debuted with a staggered release rather than a full-season binge drop. According to CBR, viewership numbers are expected to keep climbing even further, as new Hulu subscribers continue discovering the show and catching up now that its full first season is available.

‘Furious’ follows FBI agent Alice Black, played by Rossum, as she investigates a calculating female serial killer named Catherine Grace, played by Lola Petticrew. Loosely inspired by the 1987 film “Black Widow,” the series blurs the line between hunter and hunted as Alice’s investigation grows increasingly complicated by Catherine’s own hidden trauma.

Hulu’s decision to renew ‘Furious’ for Season 2 actually landed days before the Season 1 finale even aired, an aggressive move for a streamer that typically waits for long-tail viewership data before committing to another season. According to Deadline, that early renewal followed the show’s consistent presence on Luminate’s weekly rankings, where it peaked at No. 5 with 2.43 million U.S. views during its first full week of release.

The series is also believed to be the No. 1 show across both Disney+ and Hulu worldwide for the month of August, and it currently ranks as the No. 2 freshman drama on Hulu in the U.S. year to date, with 4 billion cross-media impressions, according to Deadline. Combined with a near-perfect 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, those numbers made the early pickup an easy call for the studio.

Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, known for “New Girl,” “The Dropout,” and “Dying for Sex,” ‘Furious’ also stars Quincy Tyler Bernstine as Alice’s FBI colleague Nora Washington and Scoot McNairy as NYPD homicide detective Danny Kelly. Speaking to Variety about what’s ahead, Meriwether said Season 2 will likely follow Alice and Nora working a new case within the C20 unit, which investigates sex crimes.

With its critical acclaim, strong renewal timing, and now confirmation that its finale nearly doubled its own premiere audience, ‘Furious’ has firmly established itself as one of the standout breakout hits of Hulu’s 2026 slate.

What do you think of 'Furious' becoming such a breakout hit for Hulu?
