‘Enola Holmes’ Star Millie Bobby Brown Reveals She Auditioned for a Fan-Favorite Role in ‘Logan’
Millie Bobby Brown has revealed that she once auditioned for the role of X-23 in Logan, the 2017 superhero film starring Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.
According to Brown, she was only around 11 or 12 years old when she tested for the role of Laura, also known as X-23, the fierce young mutant who ends up playing a key role in Logan. She said she even screen tested with Hugh Jackman during the process, which made the experience even more memorable for her.
Brown explained her feelings about the audition in a very honest way, saying, “I screentested with Hugh Jackman when I was like, 11 or 12… I felt like I probably didn’t get it, because I think there was someone else that was better.”
In the end, the role went to Dafne Keen, whose performance in Logan became one of the most talked-about parts of the film. Keen played Laura as a silent but intense young mutant, and her emotional connection with Jackman’s Wolverine helped shape the heart of the movie.
Logan, directed by James Mangold, follows an older and tired Wolverine living in hiding while taking care of a sick Professor X, played by Patrick Stewart. Their quiet life is disrupted when Laura arrives, hunted by dangerous forces. The film became widely praised for its darker tone and emotional storytelling, with Keen’s performance often highlighted as a standout.
Many fans and critics still point to Keen’s audition as a major reason she landed the role. Patrick Stewart himself once described it as, “one of the most extraordinary bits of audition tape I’ve ever seen in my life.” Her performance reportedly impressed the casting team so much that she was chosen over other strong contenders.
Looking back, Brown’s audition is an interesting “what if” moment in superhero casting history. At the time, she was still early in her career and had not yet become widely known for her breakout role as Eleven in Netflix’s Stranger Things. That role also showcased a similar emotional intensity and physical performance style, which is why many fans now imagine she could have fit the role of X-23 as well.

Still, Brown’s career went in a different direction. After Stranger Things, she moved into major film roles, including Godzilla: King of the Monsters, building her own path in Hollywood.
The X-23 role, meanwhile, became a defining moment for Dafne Keen, giving her a major debut on the big screen and opening the door for future projects.
Logan itself is often seen as one of the strongest entries in the superhero genre, praised for its grounded tone and emotional depth. It tells the story of Logan trying to escape his past while being pulled back into conflict by Laura’s arrival, creating a final chapter for Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine that many fans consider perfect.
Brown’s reveal adds another layer to the film’s history, showing how different the cast could have been, even for such an iconic movie.
