Eric Dane Passed Away at 53. Remembering the Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria Star
The world is grieving the loss of Eric Dane, who died on Thursday at the age of 53. The news was confirmed by his family in a statement shared by his representatives. They said Dane passed away after a ten-month battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS.
According to the family, he spent his final hours surrounded by loved ones, including his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia. Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. After sharing the news, his representatives said he made a clear choice to raise awareness about the disease and support research.
Those close to him said he wanted his experience to help others going through the same fight. ALS is a progressive illness that affects movement and breathing. Despite this, Dane remained deeply thankful for the love and encouragement he received from fans around the world, according to people who worked with him during his final year.
He became a household name through his role as Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy. He appeared on the show for six seasons and quickly became one of its most popular characters. Even after his character was written out following a plane crash storyline, the show honored his impact by renaming the hospital Grey Sloan Memorial.
In later years, Dane took on a very different role as Cal Jacobs on Euphoria. The performance surprised many viewers and showed a darker and more complex side of his acting. The role brought him renewed praise and introduced him to a younger audience.
Despite his declining health, Dane continued to work. According to reports, he filmed scenes for the third season of Euphoria while using a wheelchair. In earlier comments shared through his team, he said he felt grateful to keep working and looked forward to being on set.
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson shared a tribute shortly after Dane’s death, saying working with Eric was an honour and his friendship was a gift. Beyond television, Dane appeared in several major films, including Marley and Me, X-Men: The Last Stand, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die. He also led the post-apocalyptic series The Last Ship for five seasons and served as a producer on the show.
His life also included personal struggles. In 2017, Dane stepped away from acting to seek treatment for depression, a decision he spoke about openly. Many colleagues later praised him for his honesty and strength.
As tributes continue to pour in, Eric Dane is being remembered not only for his powerful performances but also for his resilience, openness, and commitment to his craft until the very end.
