ESPN Turns NBA Opening Night Into an ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Event With a Doctor Doom Takeover
Disney owns both ESPN and Marvel Entertainment, and every so often it likes to remind sports fans of that. With ‘Avengers: Doomsday‘ less than 2 months from theaters, the studio’s marketing push is spilling out of cinemas and into every corner of Disney’s empire. The latest ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ NBA promo shows just how far it’s willing to go.
The timing couldn’t be better. The 2026-27 NBA season tipped off Tuesday, Oct. 20, with an opening-day tripleheader on NBC and Peacock. ESPN’s own coverage begins Wednesday, Oct. 21, with a doubleheader that includes Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Heat debut and LaMelo Ball’s first game with the Timberwolves.
That’s the backdrop for ESPN’s newest hype video, a 2:18 promo released in partnership with the NBA that borrows its look and feel from the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ trailer. The title card reads “NBA IS BACK” in lettering styled after the Avengers logo, set against a glowing green backdrop with a shadowy, Doom-like figure behind it. According to ClutchPoints, the video opens with the Marvel Studios logo being overtaken by NBA on ESPN.

What follows is a dramatic monologue laid over a montage of NBA stars, with Robert Downey Jr. voicing Doctor Doom using audio from the movie’s trailer. The reigning champion New York Knicks are painted as the looming threat that the other 29 teams are trying to take down.
The video also leans on the team-up energy of the film itself. Thor’s call to put aside petty squabbles is repurposed to suggest rivals joining forces against a common enemy. It ends with LeBron James and the 76ers at their Media Day photoshoot, a fitting finale since the Sixers open the season by visiting the Knicks at Madison Square Garden, where New York will raise its championship banner before tip-off.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters Dec. 18, with Joe and Anthony Russo directing and Downey stepping in as Doctor Doom rather than Tony Stark. The story pits the Avengers, the Fantastic Four and the X-Men against Doom, and the first full trailer racked up more than 13 million views online within 4 hours of its release.
Early ticket sales suggest the buzz is real. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ reportedly generated $16.5 million in advance sales after its first day on sale, roughly twice the first-day figure for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine.’ It will open on the same day as ‘Dune: Part Three,’ which has the entire IMAX footprint for 3 weeks, so ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ won’t have access to IMAX screens.
There’s a lot riding on that opening weekend. The last time the entire MCU assembled was ‘Avengers: Endgame’ in 2019, which opened to $357 million domestically and $1.2 billion globally. The Russos’ latest film arrives more than 7 years after that blockbuster, so Marvel is leaving nothing to chance.

Basketball has become a favorite playground for the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ campaign. Australia’s NBL set aside Round 11 of its season as ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Round, with all 10 clubs wearing specially themed jerseys, a partnership announced in September.
ESPN has a history with Marvel too. In an earlier crossover, ‘Marvel’s Arena of Heroes,’ it produced an alternate NBA telecast with an original Marvel story, 3D virtual characters and custom graphics around a Warriors-Pelicans game. This time the approach is far simpler, a trailer-style hype reel, but it reaches a huge audience on one of the biggest nights of the basketball calendar.
For Marvel, the strategy makes sense. Sports fans are some of the most passionate audiences out there, and a Doom-voiced hype video that gets them talking about the movie while they wait for tip-off is about as efficient as promotion gets. The real test comes in December, when the Avengers, X-Men and Fantastic Four have to deliver on all the hype.
