New ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Team Cards Split the Film’s Huge Roster Into Four Factions
When a movie has this many heroes, someone eventually has to organize them. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ brings together more than two dozen returning stars from several universes, and Marvel’s marketing has been steadily sorting that crowd into teams. The latest example is a set of collectible cards that do exactly that.
The film’s tagline, “Worlds Collide,” frames the story as a meeting of three separate universes: the Avengers of Earth-616, the Fantastic Four of Earth-828 and the X-Men of Earth-10005. Add in the New Avengers, and the campaign has plenty of groups to juggle. That’s why a team-based promo hits so cleanly.
The newly surfaced promotional cards give each faction its own design. One card is devoted to the Avengers, another to the New Avengers, another to the X-Men and a fourth to the Fantastic Four. They’re backed by a limited-edition bonus card, labeled in Italian as rotating among four subjects, which suggests a retail promotion tied to the film’s release.
The X-Men card shows Professor X in his wheelchair alongside Beast, Cyclops, Magneto and Gambit. The Fantastic Four card features the team in their blue-and-white uniforms with Reed Richards stretching into action, and the Avengers card includes Thor, Captain America, Shang-Chi and Ant-Man. The New Avengers card covers the former Thunderbolts, including Yelena Belova and Bucky Barnes.

Those four groups map neatly onto the film’s central conflict. The New Avengers, who were known as the Thunderbolts, are led in spirit by Yelena Belova and also include Bucky Barnes and Red Guardian. Sam Wilson’s Captain America is building a separate Avengers team, and ‘Thunderbolts*’ even teased that the two sides are fighting over the name.
Then there are the legacy mutants, with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Kelsey Grammer, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn and Channing Tatum returning from the Fox films. The Fantastic Four, played by Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, round out the lineup. The Wakandans, led by Shuri and M’Baku, are also in the mix.
Of course, the cards only show the heroes. Doctor Doom is notably missing from the team set, which fits the pattern of other promo art that sometimes leaves Robert Downey Jr.’s villain out of the lineup. Another recent poster brought together seven heroes, including Reed Richards, Gambit, Sam Wilson, Yelena, Thor, Shuri and the Thing, without Doom.
The cards are part of a much larger wave of imagery. At least 25 posters have surfaced online, with some designs experimenting with different combinations of heroes while others place Doom at the center. Artists have used everything from comic-book cover aesthetics to digital line art and cel-shading.
Merchandise is expanding just as quickly. M&M’S released seven collectible mashup packs, including Yelena and Red Guardian, along with a limited-edition comic of 10,000 copies. Magic: The Gathering announced a theater-only Doctor Doom card giveaway, and Funko, Hot Toys and Cosbi bobble-heads are all in the mix.

The team structure suggests a film built around alliances and rivalries rather than a single squad. Seeing the factions presented separately gives fans a sense of the movie’s scale, and it hints at how the story may be built, with groups meeting, clashing and eventually joining forces. After all, the shared threat is Doom and the incursions he’s reportedly connected to.
The hype is already huge. Domestic pre-sales have reportedly passed $50 million, and the first trailer became the second-biggest trailer launch on record. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ opens on December 18, with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ following on December 17, 2027.
