‘Euphoria’ Star Sydney Sweeney Built an Empire on Her Own Terms, So Why Does Everyone Keep Asking Who’s Really in Charge

Few actresses have turned raw cultural visibility into a business the way Sydney Sweeney has over the past 2 years. Between blockbuster box office numbers, a growing production slate, and a lingerie brand backed by some of the biggest names in tech, she’s become less of a rising star and more of a fully operational brand.

That kind of rapid ascent tends to invite a familiar question in Hollywood: is the person at the center of it actually steering the ship, or is someone else quietly working the levers? For Sweeney, that question has taken on a very specific shape lately, and it centers on one particular relationship.

Sydney Sweeney is the hottest brand in Hollywood, but who’s really pulling the strings behind her empire has become an open question, Page Six reported, pointing to her romance with music mogul Scooter Braun as the center of the speculation. The pairing, which reportedly began after the two met at Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s Venetian wedding, has quickly become entangled with questions about who’s actually shaping her career decisions.

According to the report, an industry source claimed “Sydney absolutely listens to Scooter and Scooter has absolutely been helping to broker her deals,” a line that’s fueled speculation about how much creative and business control Braun may have taken on behind the scenes. Reports have also suggested Braun “inserted himself” into her move to CAA, adding fuel to the idea that his influence extends well beyond a typical romantic relationship.

It’s worth noting that WME’s Ari Emanuel reportedly urged Sweeney to end the relationship for the sake of her career, though Emanuel has denied making that suggestion. Whether accurate or not, the mere existence of that alleged advice suggests at least some corner of the industry sees Braun’s presence as a complicating factor in how Sweeney’s image gets managed.

Not everyone buys into the narrative that Sweeney needs a puppet master at all. A source close to the actress pushed back directly, insisting “the decisions she makes are hers,” and pop culture analyst Rachel Richardson went further, calling the idea that someone else masterminds her image “wild,” noting that “her love of provocation predates her relationship with Braun.”

That pushback lines up with what’s publicly known about how hands-on Sweeney has always been in her own career. She co-founded her production company, Fifty-Fifty Films, back in 2020, long before Braun entered the picture, and insiders describe her as someone who stays involved in marketing calls and strategic decisions on her own projects.

Sweeney’s commercial footprint speaks for itself regardless of who gets credit for it. Her SYRN lingerie brand launched with backing from Coatue Management, plus funding tied to Jeff Bezos and Michael Dell, while her producing credits include ‘Anyone But You,’ ‘The Housemaid,’ and ‘Christy,’ with the latter two pulling in a combined total well north of $400 million worldwide.

Recent campaigns, including a Novig sports partnership that drew criticism from female athletes for its provocative visuals, have only added to the ongoing conversation about whose vision is actually driving these choices. Novig’s own CEO, Jacob Fortinsky, said Sweeney herself was “driving a lot of the visuals and the messaging,” a detail that complicates any narrative suggesting she’s simply following someone else’s playbook.

At the center of all this speculation sits a question that rarely gets asked about male stars in similar positions: whether a woman’s success can be entirely her own, or whether it always needs a man’s hand attached to explain it. An insider close to Sweeney seemed to anticipate exactly that double standard, noting she “built her career through her own instincts and work ethic.”

Whether Braun genuinely plays a hands-on role in her deal-making or simply happens to be dating someone who was already running her own show remains murky, and likely intentionally so. What’s clear is that Sweeney’s brand, for better or worse, shows no signs of slowing down while the speculation plays out around her.
