Ewan McGregor Gives Blunt “Obi-Wan Kenobi” Season 2 Update, but He’s Not Giving up Yet

Star Wars fans have spent years hoping for another chapter of one of the franchise’s most beloved streaming projects. The prequel trilogy reunion between two of its most iconic actors left audiences wanting more the moment the credits rolled.

That lingering appetite has never really gone away, especially since the show wrapped its story on a note that clearly left room for additional chapters. Between the finale’s final scene and the character’s eventual appearance in the original trilogy, there’s roughly a decade of unexplored history still sitting on the table.

Ewan McGregor has now weighed in again, and the update isn’t the one fans were hoping for. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, McGregor confirmed that he and Hayden Christensen both remain interested in returning for a second season of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi,‘ but admitted, “Come on, Disney. Come on. I don’t think we are closer to that, no. I don’t know of any progress in that direction.”

He didn’t stop there, though. McGregor also floated a specific pitch for where a follow-up season could pick up, pointing to the story’s final moments as a natural jumping-off point. “We finished this series with me walking off with Liam Neeson on my camel, which is an Eopie,” he said. “And then what happens between then and when it’s Alec Guinness, I mean, there’s got to be a good few stories left to tell.”

That reference to Liam Neeson matters more than it might seem at first glance. His appearance as Qui-Gon Jinn’s Force Ghost in the finale signaled that Obi-Wan still had training ahead of him, specifically learning how to become a Force Ghost himself in death, a skill he’d eventually need before facing Darth Vader in ‘Star Wars: A New Hope.’

It’s been four years since ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ debuted, and speculation about a second season has followed the show nearly the entire time. Unlike other Star Wars series that got clean endings or clear cancellations, ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ has existed in a strange limbo, technically a limited series but never officially closed off from more.

Christensen’s continued interest adds another layer to the conversation, since a follow-up season could theoretically bring Darth Vader back into the fold as well. Given how much both actors have leaned into nostalgia around their prequel-era characters in recent years, from panel appearances to playful lightsaber reenactments at fan conventions, it’s clear neither of them has fully closed the door on returning.

Still, McGregor’s own track record on this topic complicates things a bit. He previously insisted he wasn’t returning to the franchise at all before eventually signing on for the original series, so his cautious optimism here should probably be read with a grain of salt. Whether Disney actually greenlights anything remains entirely up in the air, with no official movement reported on the studio’s end.

For now, ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ remains a one-season story, even as its stars keep publicly nudging the door open. Fans will likely keep watching every interview closely for the next hint of movement.
