Ewan McGregor Isn’t Done with Obi-Wan Kenobi, and He’s Making the Case for More

Few Star Wars performances have aged as gracefully in fan estimation as Ewan McGregor’s turn as the iconic Jedi Master. What started as a somewhat divisive prequel-era portrayal has, over the decades, transformed into one of the franchise’s most beloved character arcs, culminating in a Disney+ series that finally let McGregor explore the character’s most mysterious chapter.

That mysterious chapter, of course, is the stretch of time between Obi-Wan’s tragic falling out with Anakin Skywalker and his eventual appearance as the weathered hermit played by Alec Guinness in the original 1977 film. The 2022 limited series only scratched the surface of those lost years, and fans have spent the years since wondering whether there’s more story left to tell.

Now, McGregor himself is reigniting that conversation, making clear he still sees plenty of unexplored territory in Obi-Wan’s exile years on Tatooine. The actor has pointed to the substantial gap between where his own series left off and where Guinness’s version of the character eventually picks up, suggesting there’s ample room for additional stories bridging that timeline.

This isn’t the first time McGregor has made this exact argument. According to series creator Deborah Chow, McGregor began pitching season 2 ideas to her literally as they wrapped their final shot on the first season, telling her there’s “another 10 years with plenty of stories” left to explore. That enthusiasm has clearly stuck with him in the years since.

McGregor has also been candid about the practical math behind his continued interest in returning to the role. He has noted that he’s “got a few years yet” before reaching the same age Guinness was when he played the character in ‘A New Hope,’ meaning there’s still time to tell more stories in that gap. It’s a framing that treats his own aging process as a kind of built-in production window for Lucasfilm to work with.

The actor’s affection for the character has only deepened with time, rather than fading the way some franchise fatigue stories tend to go. McGregor has said he hopes to get a chance to do another one and is confident that it will happen eventually, reflecting on 25 years of playing the role. That kind of long-view perspective suggests his interest isn’t a fleeting press-tour talking point but a genuine, ongoing hope.

Central to McGregor’s pitch has always been the emotional weight of that specific 10-year stretch. He has previously described how, for that decade, Obi-Wan was in hiding, living a solitary life, having lost his faith in a way that mirrors someone losing their religion, calling it fascinating to take a character audiences know as the wise, sage-like figure Guinness originated and push him toward a far more broken place. That thematic richness is precisely what fuels the argument for revisiting the era again.

Fans hoping for concrete news, however, will likely need to keep waiting. Lucasfilm has yet to officially greenlight any further installments centered on the character, and McGregor’s comments so far reflect his personal wishes rather than confirmed studio plans. Still, given how consistently he’s returned to this well over multiple interviews and public appearances, the door appears far from closed.

What’s clear is that both the actor and much of the fanbase view Obi-Wan’s Tatooine years as a well that hasn’t run dry. With McGregor continuing to publicly campaign for more stories, and Lucasfilm’s history of eventually delivering on fan-demanded content, the possibility of another chapter doesn’t seem entirely far-fetched.
