‘F1’ Star Brad Pitt Opens up About Ending Seven Years of Sobriety in Candid New Interview
Brad Pitt has spent years being remarkably open about his personal evolution, from his divorce from Angelina Jolie to the work he put into rebuilding himself afterward. Few celebrities have discussed their recovery journey as candidly as Pitt has, often crediting the process with reshaping how he approaches both his career and his private life.
That openness has become something of a throughline in his public persona, especially in recent years as he’s continued to reflect on the darker chapters that led him toward sobriety in the first place. Fans and journalists alike have followed that journey closely, watching as Pitt has periodically checked in on where he stands.
Now Pitt has revealed a significant shift in that story. In a new cover interview, the actor confirmed that after seven years of sobriety, he has started drinking alcohol again, though he says he’s approaching it with far more caution than in the past.
Pitt made the revelation during a conversation at his Los Angeles home, where he ended up offering his interviewer a glass of wine. When asked if he kept alcohol around simply for guests, Pitt admitted otherwise. “I was sober for seven years,” he said. “And then I got back off the wagon.”
He was quick to clarify that this wasn’t a return to his old habits, describing his current relationship with alcohol as far more controlled. “In a more restrained manner,” Pitt explained. “I got overconfident a couple times, went, ‘Yep, nope, not good for me.’ Not in big quantities.”
Pressed further on what that restraint looks like in practice, Pitt didn’t shy away from specifics. “I can have a few,” he said. “But I can’t have a lot. I have to be professional about it.”
Pitt’s sobriety dates back to 2016, following his split from Jolie, a period he has described in previous interviews as one of the most challenging of his life. He spent a year and a half attending an all-male Alcoholics Anonymous group during that time, later crediting the experience with helping him rebuild.
In 2020, Pitt publicly thanked fellow actor Bradley Cooper for playing a role in his sobriety, telling the crowd at the National Board of Review gala that he got sober “because of this guy” and that “every day’s been happier ever since.” He revisited that period again as recently as June 2025, discussing his time in recovery meetings during an appearance on Dax Shepard’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, where he called the experience “amazing.”
That history makes his latest comments feel especially significant to longtime followers of his story. Pitt didn’t frame the shift as a setback so much as an evolution, one where he’s learned his limits the hard way and adjusted accordingly.
Beyond the conversation about alcohol, Pitt used the interview to reflect more broadly on his emotional life, including moments where he wished he could be more even-keeled. It’s part of a pattern that has defined much of his recent press cycle, where he’s leaned into vulnerability rather than deflecting from it.
Whether this new chapter marks a permanent change in how Pitt manages his relationship with alcohol remains to be seen, but his willingness to discuss it so openly continues to set him apart from many of his peers in Hollywood. For an actor who has built a career on reinvention, this latest disclosure feels like another honest chapter in a story he’s never been afraid to tell.
