Fans React as ‘District 9’ Director Unveils His First Fully AI-Created Film on YouTube

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp has found himself at the center of a heated online debate after releasing his first fully AI-generated short film. The sci-fi filmmaker recently shared Nightborne, a 13-minute proof-of-concept project created with artificial intelligence, but the response from many viewers has been far from positive.

The short film was released on YouTube on July 19 and serves as the first project from Barley Studios, an AI-focused film company founded by Blomkamp. According to the director, the entire film was created using Seedance 2.0, with Blomkamp guiding the process through prompts rather than traditional filmmaking methods.

Nightborne follows a U.S. Army pilot who survives a dangerous mission after her aircraft is shot down in Syria. After being seriously injured, she becomes part of a secret government project called Nightborne. The program uses a control implant placed in her brainstem, turning her into a weapon controlled by government forces.

The story is set in the same science-fiction universe as Peter Watts’ 2014 novel Echopraxia, which features elements including advanced technology, vampires, alien life, and zombies. While Watts has not publicly commented on the short film, the project has already created plenty of discussion online.

The biggest criticism has focused on the quality of the AI-generated visuals, dialogue, and overall style. Many viewers questioned the filmmaking choices and said the short lacked the human touch usually found in traditional productions.

Some fans expressed disappointment that Blomkamp, a filmmaker known for visually creative movies like District 9, Chappie, and Elysium, was using his time to explore AI instead of returning to projects they wanted to see. One YouTube commenter wrote, “No thank you. What a crazy fall from grace for such a beloved filmmaker.”

Another viewer criticized the experiment on social media, saying, “Wow Neill, thank you for showing us that even in the hands of an established director, AI slop looks indistinguishable from everyone else’s AI slop!”

Others joked that they would rather see progress on District 10, the long-discussed sequel to District 9.

Despite the criticism, Blomkamp appears committed to exploring AI filmmaking. In a statement shared on Instagram, the director explained that he has been testing AI technology for years and believes it has reached a point where he can use it for larger projects. “I’ve been experimenting with AI for a couple of years, and it’s now at the point where I want to tackle a full feature in this format,” Blomkamp wrote.

He also explained the goal behind Barley Studios, comparing it to his previous production company Oats Studios, which focused on traditional filmmaking and visual effects.

“Barley Studios will be my new AI studio for creating my own films, the way Oats Studios was for traditional film and VFX,” he added.

The controversy comes at a time when AI-generated movies are becoming a bigger topic across Hollywood. Recent projects created with AI tools have sparked similar debates, with audiences divided over whether the technology represents the future of filmmaking or a threat to traditional creative work.

For now, Blomkamp has not announced whether Nightborne will become a full movie, but he has suggested that a feature-length AI project could be his next major experiment. Meanwhile, fans of District 9 are still waiting to see if the long-rumored District 10 will ever move forward.

Blomkamp previously said the sequel was uncertain, admitting in 2023 that he was unsure if he wanted to make it at that time. While the director continues to explore new technology, many fans remain hopeful that he will eventually return to the world that made him famous.
