Marcia Cross, best known for her role as Bree Van de Kamp on Desperate Housewives, has shared a rare selfie, giving fans a glimpse of her life years after stepping back from major television roles.

The photo, reportedly taken during a first-class flight, was posted on social media and quickly drew attention because Cross is not often active online.

The image comes from a period where the actress has largely stayed out of the spotlight. According to reports, the 64-year-old star has been working less in recent years, making appearances only occasionally compared to her earlier decades in television.

Cross built her career across several major TV eras. She first appeared in soap operas including The Edge of Night, Another World, and One Life to Live. She also had early roles in Knots Landing and guest spots in popular series such as Cheers, Seinfeld, Quantum Leap, Ally McBeal, and Spin City. These roles helped establish her as a familiar face in American television long before her biggest breakout.

Her major turning point came in 1992 when she joined Melrose Place as Dr. Kimberly Shaw. The role made her widely known, as her character became one of the show’s most dramatic and unpredictable figures. Cross stayed on the series until 1997, appearing in storylines that often pushed the limits of soap opera drama.

She later said some of those plots felt extreme. She once described her character’s storyline as “insane”, pointing to events like a hidden brain tumor and even blowing up an apartment complex as examples of how far the show went.

After Melrose Place, Cross continued working in television and film, including small roles in various projects. But her biggest success came in 2004 when she was cast as Bree Van de Kamp in Desperate Housewives. The show became a massive global hit and ran for eight seasons until 2012.

In the series, Cross played a perfectionist suburban homemaker whose life slowly unraveled over time. The show became one of the defining TV hits of the 2000s and helped cement her status as a household name alongside co-stars like Teri Hatcher, Eva Longoria, Felicity Huffman, and Nicollette Sheridan.

Despite its success, Cross later said the role made it harder for her to find similar opportunities afterward. In an interview with Variety, she explained how long-running fame from one character can shape an actor’s future. She said, “I always assumed that after Desperate Housewives, there will be a third act. It has not happened yet. That’s the double-edged sword of being an ‘icon.’ Everybody thinks you are that character and by the time they forget about it, you are not on anybody’s list anymore.”

After Desperate Housewives ended, Cross appeared in a few smaller projects, including Law & Order: SVU and the series Quantico, where she played President Claire Haas from 2015 to 2017. However, she has not taken on another major long-running role since then.

Outside of acting, Cross has also spoken publicly about personal challenges, including her health. She revealed in 2018 that she had been treated for anal cancer and later entered remission. She has also discussed the importance of speaking openly about illness and recovery.

Cross, who studied acting at Juilliard before her career took off, has said in past interviews that working in Hollywood later in life can be difficult, especially for women over 60. Still, her recent rare selfie shows continued interest from fans who remember her most iconic roles, particularly Bree Van de Kamp, which remains one of television’s most recognizable characters.
