First ‘Hellblade: Senua’ Trailer Drops: Release Date, Story, and Gameplay Details
A new game centered on Senua was revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026, and it immediately stood out as a major shift for Ninja Theory. While the character returns after “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II,” this new project is not being presented as a direct continuation in the usual sense. Instead, it is a broader action-adventure game that expands the series into new gameplay territory.
According to Joe Skrebels, the project reflects a change in direction for the studio. He noted that it feels like Ninja Theory is now focused on creating “new kinds of games,” even while continuing Senua’s story. The game builds on the emotional storytelling the series is known for but adds more gameplay systems, larger exploration, and deeper combat mechanics.
Dom Matthews explained in the interview that the game is a full action-adventure experience. He said the goal is to keep the strong storytelling and tone of the earlier games while adding more player control and interaction. He described it as a way to give players more freedom in how they move, fight, and explore the world.
He said, “This is an out-and-out action-adventure game. It’s a bold new step for Senua, as a character, into the action-adventure space.” He added that the team is building on what already worked in the series, while expanding gameplay depth and scale.
One of the biggest changes is in combat. The new game introduces more tactical choices, allowing players to approach fights in different ways. Players can choose stealth, direct combat, or mixed strategies depending on the situation. Enemies can appear in groups, and combat now includes vertical movement, environmental tools, and a wider set of weapons.
Weapons are also more flexible. Senua can pick up weapons from enemies or find them in the environment. Some weapons can be carried forward, while others are temporary. Players can switch between melee and ranged options, and even combine weapons for different effects. The system is designed to give more freedom in combat situations instead of locking players into fixed loadouts.
Traversal has also been expanded. Movement is now faster and more fluid, with climbing, vaulting, and jumping playing a bigger role. The world includes more vertical spaces and interconnected areas. Players can choose to move quickly through the story or take time exploring different parts of the environment.
The world itself is larger than in previous games. According to Matthews, the map is about twice the size of “Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II.” However, the game is still not fully open world. It remains a linear story, but it is built in a more open structure that allows players to revisit areas and explore more freely.
Exploration is also more meaningful in this game. Hidden details and environmental clues can change how players interact with the world. Matthews explained that small elements in the environment may gain new meaning later in the story as Senua’s understanding changes. This connects directly to the game’s theme of perception and belief.
He said the team wants players to stay observant, explaining that even simple objects in the world can become important later. This design ties into the series’ focus on Senua’s mental state and how she perceives reality.
The story takes place after both previous Hellblade games. Senua is now in a version of purgatory that reflects her childhood homeland. She is trapped between life and death, and her journey focuses on trying to reach peace and reunite with lost loved ones.
Matthews explained that the game is also designed to be welcoming for new players. He said that while returning fans will recognize familiar themes and characters, new players will still be able to understand the story without prior knowledge.
The game also introduces Focus Abilities, which allow Senua to change how she interacts with the world. These abilities can be used in combat, puzzle solving, and exploration. One ability shown in the trailer allows her to “shatter reality,” opening new paths and affecting enemy behavior.
Dom Matthews described this system as part of Senua’s evolving belief system in the story. As she progresses, she gains new abilities that reflect changes in how she understands the world around her.
The interview also confirmed that the game is not called “Hellblade III” on purpose. Instead, it is simply titled “Senua,” which reflects the studio’s goal of creating something new rather than a direct continuation of the previous structure. Matthews said this decision reflects a different creative intention.
Another major change is the way the studio is organized. Ninja Theory has brought its entire team together to work on a single project for the first time in over a decade. Matthews explained that this allows for a larger and more connected development process, with all 85 developers focused on the same game.
He also confirmed that “Project Mara,” a previously announced horror project, has been paused so the studio can fully focus on Senua’s new direction.
The game is scheduled for release in 2027. It will launch on Xbox Series X and Series S, Xbox on PC, cloud streaming, Steam, and PlayStation 5. It will also be available through Game Pass on day one and will support Xbox Play Anywhere, allowing shared progress between console and PC.
Overall, the project represents a major evolution for Ninja Theory. It keeps the emotional storytelling the series is known for while expanding into a more traditional action-adventure structure with deeper combat, larger exploration, and more player freedom.
