First Official Look at Robert Eggers’ ‘Werwulf’ Finally Revealed
A new horror film called Werwulf from director Robert Eggers is moving into the spotlight, and early details are starting to come out.
The first teaser image for the movie appeared online through the NBC Store, which is an unusual place for a film reveal. The image shows a cold, snowy landscape, empty and quiet, with a strong feeling that something is hidden in the environment. There is no clear monster visible, but the atmosphere suggests danger is close.

Werwulf is set in 13th-century England. The story follows a time when old folklore begins to feel real to the people living in small villages. According to early plot information shared through production notes and media reports like Screen Daily, a strange creature is said to move through the countryside. The locals start to believe that the stories they once treated as myths are actually happening in real life. The film leans heavily into that idea of fear growing out of belief and superstition.
The cast brings together several frequent collaborators of Eggers. The film includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson, along with other supporting actors like Bodhi Rae Breathnach and Jan Bijvoet. These actors are known for working in dark and intense roles, which fits the tone Eggers usually goes for in his films.
The project was first announced in early 2025, when it was confirmed that Eggers was developing a new horror film with Focus Features involved in production and distribution. The script was co-written with Sjón, who also worked with Eggers on The Northman. Production companies such as Working Title Films joined the project later. Reports from Screen Daily and other industry outlets tracked the casting process and filming schedule as it developed over 2025.
Filming took place across several locations in England, including Elstree Studios and outdoor areas like Bourne Wood in Surrey. Some scenes were also shot in Wales and on Dartmoor, where a small set was built in a remote landscape. Cinematographer Jarin Blaschke returned to work with Eggers, continuing their long collaboration. According to reports from cast interviews and social media posts, filming wrapped in early 2026 after a final stretch of production in locations like the Forest of Dean.
Robert Eggers has described the film in very strong terms during early promotion. In an interview quoted by Esquire, he said, “It’s the darkest thing I’ve ever written. By far.” That statement has been widely shared in early coverage and adds to the expectations around the film’s tone.
The film is now scheduled for release in the United States on December 25, 2026, through Focus Features. Early footage was shown during the Universal and Focus Features presentation at CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, as reported by event coverage.
That presentation gave the first moving look at the film beyond the teaser image, though full details remain limited. For now, Werwulf remains one of the most closely watched upcoming horror releases from Eggers, especially given his history with atmospheric period horror films and his consistent creative team.
