A couple of days ago it was revealed that Sony Picture Animation will release a short film titled ‘The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story’ on YouTube.

The short film is a part of the ‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ universe, focusing on Miles Morales. The movie will follow Miles as he deals with the challenges of being a teenager, friend, student, and superhero. Under all these usual and unusual pressures, he starts having panic attacks and ultimately starts confronting the manifestations of his anxiety. Through this experience, Miles learns the importance of seeking help, realizing that reaching out is as courageous as fighting villains to protect his city.

Now a day before the premiere the studio released a first teaser for the short film.

The digital release is in collaboration with the Kevin Love Fund, and will be integrated into the fund’s mental health-focused lesson plan called ‘The Hero Within.’ This curriculum encourages students to explore mental health awareness by sharing their own stories through interactive activities, such as a creative storyboard exercise.

The director of the short Jarelle Dampier gave a statement regarding what the movie means to everyone struggling with mental health and what they hope to achieve:

Miles represents so many of us doing the best we can in our day-to-day lives. We don’t often realize all that we’ve been through until our own body forces us to become aware of its experience. My intention is that ‘The Spider Within’ can motivate deeper conversations amongst friends & family about their own mental health journeys — and I hope it feels like a love letter to those who adore Miles Morales.

‘The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse Story’ will be released on YouTube on March 27 at 6 a.m. PT.
