Ryan Gosling introduced the first trailer for Project Hail Mary during this year’s CinemaCon, a sci-fi adventure based on Andy Weir’s bestselling novel. The film, directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, follows a middle school science teacher who is sent on a space mission to save Earth after the Sun begins to die.

Gosling made it clear that Project Hail Mary is a film designed for theaters.

“We tried to put it on a TV once — it wouldn’t fit,” he joked.

Amazon MGM Studios used the CinemaCon stage to reinforce its commitment to theatrical releases, with studio head Mike Hopkins emphasizing that this was the company’s first time presenting at the event.

The trailer opens with Gosling’s character being approached by a scientist, played by Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall). She informs him that the Sun is dying and needs to be reignited. Gosling’s character, messy and reluctant, is shocked when he realizes that he is the only one who can go on this dangerous mission.

After some comedic back-and-forth, the footage jumps to Gosling’s journey through space, showing him with different beard lengths, indicating the passage of time. The trailer then shifts to the film’s big reveal—an encounter with an alien.

Gosling’s character finds a strange spaceship that sends out an iron-like object, which he soon realizes is a message. He boards another ship, where he meets an alien named Rocky. However, in the trailer, only Rocky’s three-fingered hand is shown.

The film blends humor, epic space adventure, and emotional storytelling. With The Batman and Dune cinematographer Greg Fraiser behind the visuals, Project Hail Mary promises a visually breathtaking experience.

The movie is produced by Amy Pascal, Gosling, Lord, Miller, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor, and Andy Weir. Amazon MGM Studios has set a March 20, 2026 release date.

With its mix of comedy, high-stakes adventure, and a friendly alien sidekick, Project Hail Mary is shaping up to be an exciting cinematic journey.
