Netflix has been quietly assembling one of the most prestigious television casts in recent memory, and fans of prestige drama are finally getting the full picture. Zoe Kazan’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel ‘East of Eden’ will arrive on Netflix later this year, with the streaming giant unveiling the first trailer for the seven-episode epic during its Upfront presentation.

The limited series promises a compelling twist on its source material, exploring the multi-generational Trask family saga primarily from the perspective of its most notorious female character, Cathy Ames, played by Florence Pugh. Rather than retracing familiar cinematic ground, this fresh interpretation centers the story around a character who has historically been pushed to the margins of previous screen adaptations, giving ‘East of Eden’ a genuinely new reason to exist.

Florence Pugh and the Bold Reimagining of Cathy Ames

Based on Steinbeck’s 1952 novel, the series stars Florence Pugh as one of literature’s greatest antiheroes, Cathy Ames, in a decades-spanning story that stretches from the American Civil War to World War I. Pugh was first linked to the project in 2022 and leads the cast while also serving as co-producer, reflecting the depth of creative investment she has brought to the role from the very beginning.

Appearing at the Netflix Upfront, Pugh described Cathy as “our engine in this version of the story,” making clear that the shift in perspective was one of the first things she and Kazan discussed when they joined forces for the limited series. “The series is about how the choices we make reverberate across time,” Pugh continued, adding that “this timeless story gets into the guts of what it means to be alive.”

Writing for Netflix Tudum, Kazan said plainly that “Florence Pugh is our dream Cathy,” and that she could not “imagine a more thrilling actor to bring this character to life.” Kazan also described bringing the family saga to life as a deeply resonant experience, while emphasizing that it is Steinbeck’s personal, shocking, and profound writing that has kept her enthralled since she first encountered the book as a young teen.

The role of Cathy Ames carries significant screen history. Jo Van Fleet portrayed the character in Elia Kazan’s 1955 film and later won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance. Jane Seymour then took on the part in a 1982 ABC miniseries and received a Best Actress Golden Globe for her work. Pugh steps into that storied lineage with what early industry observers are already positioning as a career-defining turn.

The Full ‘East of Eden’ Netflix Cast Lineup

Florence Pugh may be the centrepiece, but the ensemble surrounding her in ‘East of Eden’ is formidable at every level. Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask and Mike Faist plays Charles Trask, joining Pugh and Hoon Lee in the core cast. Abbott arrives following his acclaimed work in ‘Poor Things’, while Faist steps into a role made iconic by James Dean in the original film, following his own breakout performance in ‘Challengers’.

Tracy Letts plays Cyrus Trask, Martha Plimpton takes on the role of Faye, Ciarán Hinds portrays Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada plays Cal Trask, and Joe Anders plays Aron Trask. Hinds’ Samuel Hamilton is an Irishman who made his way to California and came to know the land deeply, while Hoon Lee’s character is described as someone whose intellect is surpassed only by his ability to care for those around him.

In an interview conducted by IndieWire, Abbott spoke about working opposite Pugh in a role of this complexity. “Florence is an actress where even on the surface the character might be considered an evil person, you always still try to find the heart and the humanity in that person,” he said. Pugh has already been flagged by industry observers as an early Emmy frontrunner in the Best Limited Series Actress category, which would mark her first Primetime Emmy nomination.

Zoe Kazan’s Adaptation and Its Remarkable Family Connection

One of the most striking creative dimensions of this ‘East of Eden’ adaptation is the generational thread woven through its very development. The series is written and executive produced by Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather Elia Kazan directed the celebrated 1955 film adaptation of the same novel, with James Dean starring in his first major screen role. That lineage makes this project something closer to a family reckoning than a standard literary commission.

Kazan previously shared that the resonance of her own familial connection to the material had not been lost on her during the creative process, while making clear that it was ultimately Steinbeck’s writing that has sustained her passion for the story since she first read the book as a teenager. The emotional investment clearly runs far deeper than a typical adaptation assignment.

Behind the camera, Garth Davis, best known for the Oscar-nominated film ‘Lion’, helmed Episodes 1 through 4, while Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, whose credits include ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’, directed the final three episodes. Jeb Stuart serves as co-showrunner alongside Kazan, with Anonymous Content and Fifth Season co-producing the series for Netflix.

A Fall 2026 Premiere and an Awards Race Already Taking Shape

Filming for ‘East of Eden’ began in New Zealand in mid-October 2024, with locations including Dunedin and Oamaru on the South Island. Production wrapped by March 2025, and the series spent the following months in post-production before Netflix confirmed its Fall 2026 premiere window.

The story spans decades in the lives of Cathy and the Trask family, bookended by the American Civil War and World War I, and is framed as a portrait not only of one family but of a rapidly changing society where the choices individuals make define who they become. Netflix describes the series as one where “men and women must navigate difficult decisions, and come face-to-face with the reality that, ultimately, you are what you choose.”

Considering the pedigree of the cast and Kazan’s deep familial connection to the material, industry insiders are already viewing ‘East of Eden’ as a major contender when the awards cycle begins with the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. The first teaser has done nothing to temper those expectations.

Whether you think Mike Faist stepping into James Dean’s legendary shoes is the most daring piece of casting or Florence Pugh’s Cathy Ames is what sold you on the series from the very beginning, share which member of this extraordinary ensemble you are most eager to see when ‘East of Eden’ finally arrives this fall.
