‘Focker In-Law’ First Trailer Drops as Ariana Grande Turns Up the Family Drama
Ariana Grande is taking on a new role in a well-known comedy franchise, and her latest project is already getting attention. The singer and actress appeared in the first trailer for “Focker In-Law,” which was shown at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The preview was presented by Universal Pictures to theater owners attending the event.
In the film, Grande plays Olivia, the girlfriend of Henry, who is the son of Greg Focker. Greg is once again played by Ben Stiller, while Robert De Niro returns as Jack, the tough and hard-to-please father figure. The story builds on the original “Meet the Parents” film, which followed Greg trying to win over Jack. That movie became a big success and led to more sequels.
This time, the focus shifts to the next generation. Henry brings Olivia into the family, but Greg does not trust her at first. At the same time, Jack quickly takes a liking to her, which creates tension. During the CinemaCon presentation, Stiller joked, “I guess you could say I’m the new De Niro of the franchise.” Shortly after, De Niro surprised the crowd by walking on stage. He later praised Grande, calling her “probably the single funniest scene partner I’ve ever been lucky enough to share the screen with.”

More insight into the character came from Grande herself during her Actors on Actors talk with Adam Sandler. She explained the conflict clearly, saying, “son’s girlfriend, who he’s not sure of or connecting with. He’s very against me. And the worst part — his character’s nightmare is — I get along gorgeously with Robert De Niro’s character, Jack. He loves me, and I get immediate approval from the rest of the family.”
In the trailer, Olivia is shown as confident and highly capable. She even tells the family that she trained as an FBI hostage negotiator. She uses that mindset to deal with Greg, which only makes things more awkward for him. Meanwhile, the rest of the family quickly warms up to her, leaving Greg feeling pushed out.
The film is set to be released in theaters this Thanksgiving, based on details shared during the CinemaCon event.
This looks like a smart way to refresh the franchise. Bringing in Ariana Grande adds a new energy, and the shift to a younger couple keeps the story moving forward. The mix of old and new characters could make the film appealing to both longtime fans and new audiences. What do you think about Ariana Grande joining the Focker family?
