Former Bond Girl Trina Parks Says the Next 007 Needs a Serious Modern Makeover, and Fans Are Taking Notice

James Bond has spent more than six decades reinventing himself for new generations, and every casting search or creative shift sparks fresh debate about what the franchise should actually look like moving forward. With Amazon MGM now steering the ship following its acquisition of the property, speculation about the next era of 007 has reached a fever pitch this year.

Much of that conversation has centered on casting, with names ranging from Jacob Elordi to Sydney Sweeney swirling through endless rumor cycles. But one voice with genuine franchise history has now weighed in on something arguably more important than who plays Bond, namely, how the character himself should actually behave.

That voice belongs to Trina Parks, who made history as the franchise’s first Black Bond girl playing the assassin Thumper opposite Sean Connery in 1971’s ‘Diamonds Are Forever.’ Parks has now offered a pointed take on what she believes the next reboot needs to get right, and it centers heavily on how the film treats its female characters.

According to Parks, the script really has to reflect the modern world, one where women are stronger characters and hold powerful positions, and she wants the new movie to place women as Bond’s genuine equal rather than side pieces defined only by their attraction to him, in comments made to The Telegraph. She added that she would like the franchise to keep the romance element intact, but without giving Bond a multitude of partners the way earlier films often did.

Parks was direct about what she does not want to see either. She explained that she does not want women simply falling into bed with Bond because he is good looking, insisting instead that any future love interest should be someone Bond genuinely has to prove himself worthy of, someone who matches him rather than exists purely to seduce or be seduced.

That call for balance does not mean Parks wants to strip away the franchise’s signature style entirely. She acknowledged that audiences still want to see seduction and that classic vintage flavor the series has always carried, while insisting the women involved need to be positioned on equal footing rather than as passive romantic conquests.

Interestingly, recent Bond entries have already started moving in that direction. Daniel Craig’s final two outings as 007, ‘Spectre’ and ‘No Time to Die,’ saw the character in a largely monogamous relationship with Madeleine Swann, played by Léa Seydoux, with the pair even having a daughter together by the story’s end.

Parks specifically pointed to Halle Berry’s character Jinx from 2002’s ‘Die Another Day’ as the kind of blueprint she would like to see the new writers draw from, praising that character as a genuine match for Bond rather than a passive romantic interest. She also expressed hope that Steven Knight, the ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator now developing the new Bond film for Amazon, takes that kind of dynamic seriously as the franchise moves forward.

Since ‘No Time to Die’ closed out Craig’s run, Amazon MGM has kept fans guessing through a yearslong stretch of speculation over who will take on the role next and what direction the character will take. With voices like Parks now publicly weighing in on the franchise’s future, the pressure to strike the right balance between honoring Bond’s legacy and updating it for a modern audience continues to build.

Whether Amazon’s new creative team ultimately embraces that kind of shift remains to be seen, but Parks’s comments add a meaningful historical perspective to a conversation that has largely focused on casting speculation so far. As one of the people who helped shape the franchise’s earliest depictions of women, her input carries a particular kind of weight.
