France Just Made ‘Dunesday’ Official with a Brand New Logo, and It’s Everything Fans Wanted
The countdown to one of the biggest cinematic showdowns in recent memory just got a visual upgrade. For months now, movie fans have been buzzing about a single date on the calendar, one that promises to pit two cinematic titans against each other in a battle unlike anything since the summer of 2023. That anticipation has only grown louder with every trailer drop and marketing tease.
What started as an offhand joke between two A-list stars has since snowballed into a full-blown cultural moment, complete with its own nickname, countless memes, and now, apparently, official branding. Theater chains and studios alike have leaned into the hype rather than shy away from it, recognizing a golden marketing opportunity when they see one.
That branding just took a major step forward. A promotional logo spotted in France merges the title treatments of ‘Dune: Part Three‘ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ into a single combined design reading ‘Dunesday,’ confirming the crossover nickname has now made its way into official theatrical marketing material. The mashup logo signals that exhibitors are fully embracing the head-to-head release rather than treating it as an awkward scheduling conflict.
The nickname itself has a fittingly starry origin story. During a screening event for ‘Marty Supreme,’ Robert Downey Jr. appeared onstage alongside Timothée Chalamet and made a joke about the fact that ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and ‘Dune: Part Three’ were scheduled to open on the same day. “We both have films opening on December 18, and we decided to coin it… We’re thinking Dunesday,” Downey said, according to Deadline. He added, “We’ll see if we’re still friends by then,” capping off the exchange with a laugh from the crowd.
The comparisons to 2023’s viral ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon were immediate and, frankly, unavoidable. Just as ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ collided on the same release date and became one of the biggest box office weekends in recent memory, ‘Dune: Part Three’ and ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ are now positioned for their own sci-fi-versus-superhero showdown. Unlike the Barbenheimer pairing, though, this clash features two franchises chasing remarkably similar audiences.
Behind the playful branding lies a genuinely tense standoff. Dune: Part Three had staked out the December 18 date first, while Avengers: Doomsday was originally set for May 2025 before the 2023 Hollywood strikes pushed the Marvel sequel back, eventually landing it on the same day as Villeneuve’s finale. Neither Warner Bros. nor Disney has budged since, setting the stage for a genuine box office duel rather than a friendly coexistence.
The format wars have added another layer of intrigue to the rivalry. ‘Dune: Part Three’ secured IMAX exclusivity in U.S. theaters, locking up every IMAX screen nationwide for three weeks, while ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will only screen in IMAX in select international markets, with domestic audiences instead getting Disney’s newly unveiled “Infinity Vision” format. That premium format skirmish has only fueled the sense that this is shaping up to be a genuine industry battle rather than a lighthearted crossover event.
Whether the two blockbusters end up splitting audiences or lifting each other the way ‘Barbie’ and ‘Oppenheimer’ once did remains the biggest question heading into the holiday season. What’s clear is that both studios, and now apparently theater marketers in France, are leaning fully into the spectacle rather than downplaying it.
