‘Furious’ Star Emmy Rossum Says ‘Shameless’ Nude Scenes Left Men With ‘Preconceived Notions’ About Her

Emmy Rossum spent nearly a decade playing one of television’s most memorable working-class heroines, but the role came with a side effect she didn’t fully anticipate at the time. Playing Fiona Gallagher on ‘Shameless‘ meant regularly appearing nude on screen, a choice that shaped her career in ways that extended well beyond the show itself.

That kind of visibility can follow an actress long after a series wraps, especially when a role becomes as culturally significant as Fiona did during the show’s nine-season run. Rossum was just 24 when ‘Shameless’ premiered in 2011, meaning much of her twenties played out under that particular spotlight.

Now, Rossum is opening up about how that exposure complicated her personal life at the time. Speaking with Maria Sharapova on the September 16 episode of the “Pretty Tough” podcast, the actress revealed that her nude scenes made dating considerably more difficult, as men she went out with often carried assumptions about who she was based on her on-screen persona.

“It got quite tricky because of the nudity on the show,” Rossum said. “All of the guys that I would go out with had preconceived notions of who I was or how I was sexually.”

Rossum shared one particularly memorable example from her dating history that stuck with her over the years. She recalled meeting a man on a plane who took her out afterward, only for the date to take an unexpected turn once his career ambitions came up.

“I met this guy on a plane and he was very cute and he took me out on a date,” Rossum said. “We were not meant to be together. But he was like, ‘I really want to be president someday.’ He’s like, ‘But I feel like running for office and dating someone who’s been exposed in the way that you have… do you think that would be tricky for me?'” Rossum recalled responding, “This is an insane conversation to have.”

That kind of reaction reflects a broader frustration she described feeling throughout her twenties, as she navigated both her personal identity and her public image simultaneously. “You’re trying to figure out who you are,” she said. “You’re coming into your own as an artist. And there’s also all these preconceived notions about you that are out there and are associated with [you] because your body is your art, right? And people can get confused.”

Rossum’s dating struggles eventually gave way to a more settled chapter in her personal life. She married ‘Mr. Robot’ creator Sam Esmail in 2017, and the couple now share two children together, a five-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.

Before that marriage, Rossum was briefly married to music executive Justin Siegel from 2008 to 2010, a relationship that unfolded during the earlier, more chaotic stretch of her dating life she described on the podcast. Looking back at that period now, decades removed from Fiona Gallagher and the pressures that came with the role, Rossum’s comments offer a rare window into how public perception can shape an actress’s private relationships in ways audiences rarely consider.

For an actress who spent nearly a decade defined by one of television’s most nuanced roles, the disconnect between her on-screen persona and real identity clearly left a lasting impression, one she’s only now candidly reflecting on years later.
