FX’s ‘Far Cry’ Anthology Series Gets a Major Casting Boost With New Star Addition
Lizzy Caplan is joining the upcoming FX series ‘Far Cry’, bringing another familiar face to Noah Hawley’s television adaptation of Ubisoft’s popular video game franchise. The actress will star alongside previously announced cast member Rob Mac as the series continues to build its lineup ahead of its debut on FX and Hulu.
The news was reported as the show moves forward with its unique approach to adapting the ‘Far Cry’ games. Instead of telling one long story, the series will follow the same format as the video game franchise, with every season introducing a new location, new characters and a different survival story.
Caplan is best known for playing Janis Ian in the hit comedy ‘Mean Girls’. More recently, she appeared in Netflix’s political thriller series ‘Zero Day’ and FX’s drama series ‘Fleishman Is In Trouble’. Her addition gives the project another experienced performer as FX and creator Noah Hawley continue developing the ambitious adaptation.
The ‘Far Cry’ games are known for placing regular people in extreme situations where they must fight to survive against dangerous enemies. Across the franchise, players have faced warlords, violent groups and mysterious cult leaders while exploring large open worlds filled with action and danger.
Since the first game was released in 2004, ‘Far Cry’ has become one of Ubisoft’s biggest franchises, attracting more than 100 million players worldwide. The latest major entry, ‘Far Cry 6’, was released in 2021 and continued the series’ tradition of featuring memorable villains and dramatic conflicts.
Noah Hawley, who created the acclaimed series ‘Fargo’ and ‘Alien: Earth’, previously explained why the anthology format of ‘Far Cry’ appealed to him. He compared the structure of the show to his work on ‘Fargo’, where each season tells a different story while exploring similar themes.
“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of ‘Fargo’ is a variation on a theme,” Hawley said.
He added that the ability to change the story and setting every season was one of the biggest reasons he wanted to take on the project. “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true,” Hawley said.
The series will be produced by FX Productions, with Hawley and Rob Mac among the executive producers. Other producers include Emilia Serrano for 26 Keys, Nick Frenkel for 3 Arts, Jackie Cohn for More Better Productions, John Campisi, and several executives from Ubisoft Film & Television.
With Caplan joining the cast and Hawley leading the creative team, FX’s ‘Far Cry’ is shaping up to be a major new action series. The show aims to capture the unpredictable survival elements of the games while creating a fresh television experience that can reinvent itself with every new season. A release date has not yet been announced.
