Gal Gadot Just Sealed Her Wonder Woman Fate, and Her Farewell Message Will Break Your Heart

Gal Gadot’s tenure as Wonder Woman spans nearly a decade at this point, dating all the way back to her debut as Diana Prince in 2016’s ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.’ She went on to lead two solo films for the character and became one of the defining faces of the old DC Extended Universe.

Since James Gunn took over as DC Studios co-CEO and rebooted the franchise into the new DCU, Gadot’s future with the role has remained a lingering question mark. Her final DCEU appearances came as brief cameos in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ and ‘The Flash,’ both released in 2023, leaving fans to wonder whether the door was still open for a comeback.

That question now has an answer. Speaking with ScreenRant while promoting her new Prime Video thriller ‘The Runner,’ Gadot confirmed she hasn’t had any specific conversations with Gunn or DC Studios about either reprising her role as Wonder Woman or taking on a different character in the DCU, the way her former co-star Jason Momoa did when he stepped into the role of Lobo.

According to Gadot, the last real discussion she had with the studio was when representatives told her they wanted to develop a third Wonder Woman film with her still in the lead. That conversation, she noted, happened a while ago, and she hasn’t heard anything since.

It’s a notably different tone from what Gadot said back in 2023, when she claimed she had met with Gunn and then co-CEO Peter Safran about moving forward with ‘Wonder Woman 3.’ That version of the project never materialized, and Gunn later confirmed through social media that no actor had officially been cast for the DCU’s new take on the character.

With the door seemingly shut on her own return, Gadot used the moment to pass the torch with grace rather than bitterness. She told ScreenRant, “This is such an incredible character that so many of us care about so much,” adding that she hopes whoever takes over will enjoy the journey as much as she did.

The DCU’s new Wonder Woman movie is already taking shape behind the scenes, with Ana Nogueira, who previously worked on ‘Supergirl,’ attached to write the script. No actress has been officially confirmed for the role, though Adria Arjona has been the subject of ongoing rumors linking her to Gunn’s upcoming ‘Man of Tomorrow.’

Some fans haven’t fully given up on seeing Gadot in the DCU somewhere down the line, even if it’s not as Diana Prince. Names like Big Barda, Talia al Ghul, and Poison Ivy have circulated among fan casting wishlists, pointing to Gadot’s physicality and screen presence as a natural fit for other iconic DC roles.

Given how personal the role has clearly remained for her, it makes sense that Gadot isn’t rushing to jump into a different DCU part just for the sake of staying in the franchise. Between her busy slate of outside projects and the emotional weight she still carries for the character, a proper sit-down with Gunn about her next chapter may simply need more time.

For now, Gadot’s plate is already full with projects outside the DC world, including Disney’s live-action ‘Snow White,’ Netflix’s ‘Heart of Stone,’ and her upcoming ‘The Runner’ for Prime Video. Whether or not she and Gunn ever sit down to discuss a new chapter for her in the DCU, her message made one thing clear: she’s proud of what ‘Wonder Woman’ became under her watch, and she’s ready to let someone else carry the shield.
