Fan casting has become something of a full-time hobby for superhero movie enthusiasts, and few actresses have generated as much of that speculative buzz lately as Sydney Sweeney. From Black Canary to Power Girl, fan-made concept art imagining Sweeney in various DC roles has repeatedly gone viral over the past year, feeding into an ongoing conversation about which iconic hero she might eventually be perfect for.

That speculation reached a new level this week, and this time it didn’t require any digital artwork at all. Sweeney shared a photo dump to Instagram from what she captioned “camp ’26,” featuring a real-life costume shot of herself dressed as Wonder Woman, complete with a red-and-gold headband, matching bustier top, and star-spangled bottoms, standing alongside a friend dressed as Superman.

That photo landed at a particularly convenient moment, since fans had already spent the better part of a year imagining Sweeney in the role through fan art. Back in September, DeviantArt user Minsc93 created concept art placing Sweeney in Gal Gadot’s classic Wonder Woman armor but with darker hair, aligning more closely with how DC Studios’ rebooted version of Diana Prince is expected to look, following an earlier update on the character’s development status from DC leadership.

That earlier fan art wasn’t an isolated moment either. Sweeney’s name has repeatedly surfaced across other DC fan-casting campaigns, with concept artists imagining her as Black Canary in a leather jacket and fishnets, as Power Girl complete with the character’s signature platinum bob and chest window costume, and now, with an actual real-world costume photo, as Wonder Woman herself.

Part of what’s fueled that recurring speculation is Sweeney’s existing, if brief, brush with superhero material. She played Julia Cornwall, a future version of Spider-Woman, in 2024’s critically maligned “Madame Web,” a role that only saw her briefly gain powers through flash-forward visions rather than a full-fledged heroic arc. Despite the film’s poor reception, her presence in it hasn’t slowed her momentum, and fans have continued treating her as an obvious candidate for a more substantial comic book role.

DC’s actual Wonder Woman reboot remains in active development, with the film’s screenplay currently being written and expected to move into production once that script is finalized. No casting decisions have been publicly confirmed for Diana Prince within the rebooted DC Universe, leaving the role entirely open to fan speculation for the time being.

Other names have circulated in that same conversation, including Alexandra Daddario and Ana de Armas, both of whom fans have argued fit more closely with the traditional comic book image of the character. Sweeney’s supporters, meanwhile, have pointed to her range across comedic and dramatic roles as evidence she could bring fresh energy to a character that’s historically balanced strength, humor, and emotional depth.

Adding another layer to the online chatter, Sweeney’s “Anyone But You” co-star Glen Powell has previously expressed public enthusiasm about potentially joining the DCU as Batman, a detail fans have pointed to as evidence of appealing on-screen chemistry that could theoretically extend into a shared superhero franchise down the line, though nothing concrete has been confirmed on that front either.

For now, Sweeney’s Halloween-style costume photo remains just that, a fun personal post rather than any official confirmation of casting news. Still, given how consistently her name keeps surfacing across DC fan campaigns, this latest image has been more than enough to send speculation into overdrive once again.
