‘Game of Thrones’ Star Hafþór Björnsson Wants to Play Kratos in Amazon’s ‘God of War ‘, But There’s One Big Problem

Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson has spent years building a reputation as one of the most physically imposing figures in entertainment, whether he’s dominating strongman competitions or terrifying audiences as Gregor “The Mountain” Clegane on ‘Game of Thrones.’ That combination of raw size and screen presence has made him a natural fit for larger-than-life roles, and he’s apparently got his eye on one more.

Prime Video’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the beloved ‘God of War‘ video game franchise has spent months rolling out casting news, building anticipation for a project that fans have wanted for years. With the show already deep into assembling its cast, one particular role has drawn Björnsson’s attention in a very public way.

Björnsson took to social media with an AI-generated image depicting himself as Kratos, the franchise’s iconic protagonist, asking fans directly whether they’d want to see him take on the role. He captioned the post by asking fans to be honest about whether they’d want to see him as Kratos, sharing the image on his official account.

The image itself shows Björnsson looking strikingly close to the character, complete with Kratos’ signature red tattoo markings and Spartan-inspired costume. It’s a convincing bit of digital transformation that clearly resonated with fans, even if the timing behind it comes with one significant complication.

That complication is simple: Kratos has already been cast. Prime Video confirmed earlier this year that Ryan Hurst, known for his work on ‘Sons of Anarchy,’ would be taking on the role for the two-season adaptation, a casting decision that’s already received largely positive reactions from the fan community and even earned praise from Christopher Judge, the actor who has voiced Kratos in the games since 2018.

Judge specifically endorsed Hurst’s casting, saying all he wanted was for whoever played Kratos to love, cherish, and respect the character as much as longtime fans do, and that Hurst fit that description perfectly. He praised Hurst as both a talented actor and a genuine fan of the franchise who has played the games since their inception.

The show’s cast has continued to fill out around Hurst in recent months. Ólafur Darri Ólafsson has been cast as Thor, Mandy Patinkin will play Odin, Max Parker takes on Heimdall, and Teresa Palmer rounds out the ensemble as Sif. Under showrunner Ronald D. Moore, known for ‘Outlander’ and ‘For All Mankind,’ the series will follow Kratos and his young son as they journey to scatter the ashes of his late wife and the boy’s mother.

Given that casting is already locked in, Björnsson’s post reads more as a fun bit of wishful thinking than any genuine indication of a role change on the horizon. There’s no indication from Amazon or the production that Hurst’s casting is in any jeopardy, making Björnsson’s pitch a playful hypothetical rather than a serious campaign.

Still, the strongman-turned-actor’s physical presence makes it easy to understand why fans might entertain the idea, even purely as a fun thought experiment. Standing at an imposing height and known for his powerlifting background, Björnsson certainly has the build to pull off a convincing take on the character, even if the timing simply doesn’t line up.

For now, ‘God of War’ fans will have to settle for imagining what a Björnsson version of Kratos might have looked like, while the actual production moves forward with Hurst already deep into preparing for the role. Whether Björnsson’s playful pitch leads to any future opportunity within the franchise remains to be seen.
