That’s exactly what happened when George R.R. Martin was asked point-blank at a public event who would win in a duel between Jaime Lannister and Aragorn. Martin didn’t hesitate, and his answer has fans arguing all over again.

“I think Jaime would take Aragorn, especially if he was armored,” Martin said in a clip of the exchange. He went on to needle ‘The Lord of the Rings’ hero specifically over his gear, adding, “Aragorn never wears a full set of armor as I recall… My guys wear armor.”

The comment leans into a very specific detail from Peter Jackson’s films, where Aragorn is typically seen in lighter gear like chain mail or leather rather than the heavier plate armor favored by Westerosi knights. Martin’s reasoning boils down to a simple idea: even the greatest swordsman can be undone by a well-placed blade if he isn’t properly protected.

Naturally, ‘Lord of the Rings’ loyalists weren’t ready to concede the point so easily. Fans have pushed back hard on the idea that gear alone would decide the fight, pointing to Aragorn’s decades of real combat experience and his bloodline as the last of the Dúnedain, a lineage tied to legendary strength and endurance.

Jaime, for his part, is no slouch either. Before losing his sword hand, he was widely considered one of the best fighters in the Seven Kingdoms, a reputation built on tournament wins and battlefield experience during Robert’s Rebellion. Still, critics of Martin’s take argue that Jaime’s résumé pales in comparison to a warrior who spent roughly half a century fighting Sauron’s forces across Middle-earth.

The framing of the fight matters quite a bit here too. Martin’s comments specifically imagine both characters at the peak of their respective powers, meaning a Jaime who still has both hands and hasn’t yet been humbled by the losses that reshape his arc later in the story.

One Reddit user pushed back directly on Martin’s logic, arguing that Aragorn would “slice Jaime open from head to toe” regardless of the armor question, while another countered that Jaime is theoretically the better swordsman, since Aragorn’s focus has always leaned more toward leadership than one-on-one combat.
