‘Get Jiro’ First Trailer Reveals Anthony Bourdain’s Dystopian Culinary Nightmare, Release Date Revealed

Anthony Bourdain’s legacy has taken on many forms since his passing, but few adaptations of his work capture his sensibility quite like this next one. His graphic novel series about a world where chefs rule with an iron fist is finally getting the animated treatment it’s been building toward for years.

‘Get Jiro‘ began as a New York Times bestselling DC/Vertigo graphic novel co-written by Bourdain and Joel Rose, with artwork by Langdon Foss and Alé Garza, first published in 2012. The story imagines a near-future Los Angeles where master chefs have become the city’s true power brokers, and securing a table at the right restaurant is worth killing over.

Adult Swim has now released the first trailer for the animated series adaptation, giving fans their earliest real look at just how far the show plans to push that premise. The series follows Jiro, a mysterious and revenge-driven sushi chef who arrives in a dystopian version of Los Angeles where customers routinely resort to murder just to secure a coveted table at the city’s top restaurants.

Series creator Alessandro Tanaka has described the show’s setting as a fractured mash-up of Los Angeles and Tokyo, one where every basic human need, from travel to intimacy, can be fully satisfied through virtual technology except for the actual experience of eating real food. That scarcity has turned chefs into something resembling rival crime bosses, with warring culinary factions battling for dominance across the city.

Tanaka explained that Jiro’s arrival throws that entire ecosystem into chaos, as the chef begins deliberately playing the city’s powerful food barons against one another in pursuit of a deeply personal vendetta. He described the character’s overarching plan as building toward a singular, deliberate outcome, comparing it to constructing a recipe for one final, explosive confrontation.

The series boasts a stacked voice cast led by Brian Tee in the role of Jiro, joined by Titus Welliver, Alison Pill, Justin Kirk, and Garret Dillahunt rounding out the ensemble. Rick Morales directs the 10-episode season, which is being produced by Warner Bros. Animation with Tanaka and Brian Gatewood, the writing duo behind the A24 film ‘Sharper’ and NBC’s ‘Superstore,’ serving as co-showrunners.

Tanaka has also spoken about the show’s visual influences, noting that Bourdain’s well-known love of cinema directly shaped the series’ structural DNA, with the production pulling heavily from classic samurai and western film traditions. That blend of genre influences appears designed to give the show a distinct identity beyond its shock-value premise of culinary violence.

‘Get Jiro’ is set to premiere on Adult Swim on October 3 as part of the network’s Toonami programming block, airing at midnight before becoming available to stream the following day on HBO Max. The show will also get a special screening and panel at New York Comic Con on October 10, giving fans an early chance to see footage and hear directly from the creative team behind the project.

With its blend of dark comedy, culinary carnage, and genre-blending visual style, ‘Get Jiro’ looks poised to become one of Adult Swim’s more distinctive offerings this fall.
