The live-action God of War series is still on the way, and now we finally have some fresh updates straight from San Diego Comic-Con 2025. Ronald D. Moore, the new showrunner, talked to Collider’s Steve Weintraub and gave fans a real look at where the project stands.

Right now, the team is still writing the scripts. Moore said they’re deep in the writing phase and figuring out how to bring the world of Kratos and Atreus to life in live-action. The plan is for the first season to have ten episodes. If things move forward smoothly, filming could begin in 2026.

Moore, known for shows like Battlestar Galactica, Outlander, and For All Mankind, admitted that this is his first time adapting a video game. But he’s been impressed with how deep and rich the God of War world is.

“We’re in the scripts phase. We’re still working on scripts. It’s going very well. We’ve got a good team. It’s been a fascinating thing to sink my teeth into. I’ve never done an adaptation of a video game, and the deeper I got into it, the more impressed I was with the breadth and the depth of the mythology that’s involved in this video game.”

Moore also shared how important Cory Barlog, the creative director at Santa Monica Studio, has been to the process. Barlog is working closely on the series and bringing his deep knowledge of the game to the writers’ room.

“Cory Barlog is a genius. That’s not a word I throw around very much, but I’ve had several meetings with Cory… He can tell you the whole thing in every possible way — all the mythology, how it connects one to the other, what the puzzles were, why they did this, and what that artifact did. It’s really impressive.”

The series will follow the Norse storyline from the games, starting with the events of the 2018 reboot. Kratos and his son Atreus will be the main focus. But Moore made it clear they’re not doing a scene-for-scene remake.

“It’s an adaptation-slash-interpretation… We want to keep the story. We want to keep the characters and the spirit of it. There’s all this stuff that you can keep turning to for inspiration.”

The God of War show was first talked about in March 2022, when Deadline reported that Amazon was in talks to make a series. Sony later confirmed the news, and by December 2022, it was officially ordered. At first, Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, and Rafe Judkins were developing it.

They eventually left the project in 2024 when Amazon and Sony decided to take the story in a different direction. That’s when Moore stepped in to take over.

The show is being produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon Studios, along with PlayStation Productions and Santa Monica Studio. Cory Barlog, Asad Qizilbash, Carter Swan, Yumi Yang, Roy Lee, and Jeff Ketcham are all involved as producers. The series will stream on Prime Video and will be available in over 240 countries.

So while it’s still early days, God of War fans can finally breathe a little easier knowing that things are moving forward. With Moore and Barlog working closely together, the story of Kratos and Atreus might just be in good hands.
