‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ First Trailer Unleashes Chaos as Godzilla Heads for New York City
Godzilla Minus Zero made a strong first impression at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where director Takashi Yamazaki shared new details and showed the first trailer for the upcoming sequel, according to event coverage from the presentation.
Yamazaki appeared on stage to update fans and industry guests on the follow-up to his 2023 film Godzilla Minus One. The original movie was a major international success and went on to win an Academy Award for visual effects.
The director confirmed that the new film will continue the same storyline. He said, “This film will be a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One.” He also added that the focus remains on the central family from the previous film, saying, “It will continue to follow the story of the Shikishima family.”

He described a darker direction for the sequel, explaining that the characters will face even greater pressure and danger. He said, “In this new film, an even deeper despair will descend upon Japan and the Shikishima family. When faced when overwhelming and inescapable force, how do people fight back?” He also noted, “The journey from Minus to Zero will not be an easy one.”
At CinemaCon, attendees were also shown behind-the-scenes footage that highlighted the scale of production. Yamazaki then revealed the first teaser trailer, giving fans their first look at the returning kaiju.
A line from the teaser added tension to the preview, with a voice saying, “If their operation fails, maybe we’ll finally get to use it,” hinting at a larger response to the growing threat.
The trailer’s biggest moment came at the end, where Godzilla is seen moving through New York City, with the Statue of Liberty appearing in its path. The scene drew a strong reaction from the audience.
The story of Godzilla Minus One followed Kōichi Shikishima, a former wartime pilot struggling with trauma while facing Godzilla in postwar Japan. The film earned more than $110 million worldwide and became the first Japanese production to win the Oscar for best visual effects.
The sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero, is set for theatrical release on November 6, and expectations are now rising after its first public reveal.
This sequel already feels like a big step up in scale, especially with the move to New York teased in the trailer. It will be interesting to see if it can match the emotional impact of the first film while also going bigger visually. What do you think about this direction for Godzilla?
