Few Hollywood breakups have stayed in the spotlight like the one between Sofía Vergara and Joe Manganiello. The pair met in 2014 and married in Palm Beach in 2015. They spent years as one of the industry’s most photographed couples before announcing their split in July 2023.

Both stars have since moved on, at least publicly. Manganiello began dating actress Caitlin O’Connor, while Vergara was linked to orthopedic surgeon Justin Saliman and later told a news outlet she was single again and having fun. For a while, the story seemed to have settled into a quiet truce.

That truce cracked this week. Excerpts from Manganiello’s memoir ‘Bloodlines’ surfaced on October 7 through People, and they paint a bleak picture of the final stretch of his marriage. He writes about a 7-year autoimmune battle that nearly cost him his life, and says his health began declining not long after the wedding.

According to the excerpts, Manganiello claims Vergara refused to hug him, even when he asked, and made fun of the puppy he credits with helping him through a suicidal period. He describes the marriage as having become emotionally empty as his condition worsened. He also reveals that he later had surgery to reconnect his digestive tract.

The book also revisits why the couple really split. Vergara has said for years that the marriage ended because he wanted kids and she didn’t want to be an older mom. Manganiello writes that they had discussed egg donors after failed IVF attempts, but that he abandoned the idea while seriously ill, fearing he might die and leave her with a child who wasn’t biologically hers.

Then came the twist. On October 9, TMZ reported that Vergara had shared a post about narcissistic men, laying out the telltale signs of the type. It landed just days after the memoir excerpts went public.

The outlet framed the post as a possible subtle dig at her ex-husband. That reading is an interpretation, though, and a general social media post isn’t the same as a direct response. The report added that Manganiello had been contacted about the post.

This isn’t the first time the exes’ accounts have clashed. In July 2024, Manganiello told Men’s Journal that Vergara’s explanation was untrue. He said the couple tried to start a family during the first 18 months of their marriage, and that they simply grew apart.

Vergara brushed off that earlier round when asked about it in an interview with Variety. She questioned whether he had even said it in the first place. It was a cool, almost dismissive response, and it stands in sharp contrast to the intensity of the memoir.

The legal side of the split was quiet by comparison. Manganiello filed for divorce just days after the announcement, with both citing irreconcilable differences and a prenup in place. The case settled in early 2024, and TMZ described the ending as amicable.

That calm backdrop makes the memoir’s tone all the more jarring. When the split was announced, the pair said they still loved and cared for one another and asked for privacy as they navigated a new chapter. ‘Bloodlines’ reads like a very different account of what those final years looked like behind closed doors.

Vergara, known to audiences for ‘Modern Family’ and her judging gig on ‘America’s Got Talent’, has not been quoted directly responding to the excerpts in the reporting gathered so far. Manganiello, who rose to fame with ‘True Blood’ and ‘Magic Mike’, is now sharing some of his most personal experiences in print. With the full book still to be read, more details are likely to surface.

For now, the public fascination shows no sign of fading. Whether Vergara addresses the memoir head-on or lets her posts do the talking remains to be seen.

Do you think Sofía Vergara’s post about narcissistic men was a response to Joe Manganiello’s memoir?
