‘Grown Ups 3’ Might Be Honoring Cameron Boyce in the Most Emotional Way Possible

Adam Sandler has never been shy about reuniting his real-life friends for another round of laughs, and the ‘Grown Ups’ franchise has always leaned heavily into that genuine camaraderie both on and off screen. More than a decade after the second film hit theaters, that same crew is finally getting back together for one more trip.

This time, though, the tone appears to be shifting in a noticeably different direction. Rather than another lighthearted summer getaway, early plot details suggest ‘Grown Ups 3’ will carry real emotional weight, following Lenny, Marcus, Rob, Kurt, Eric, and their significant others as they process a genuine loss within their tight-knit group.

According to those plot details, the film picks up after the death of a close friend, with the gang traveling to Europe together to spread his ashes while still trying to prove they can find fun in each other’s company even in their sixties. That premise marks a clear tonal departure from the earlier two films, which largely centered on lighthearted nostalgia rather than grief.

Fans quickly began speculating about who that unnamed friend might represent, with many pointing directly to Cameron Boyce, who played Lenny’s son Keithie in both the original ‘Grown Ups’ and its 2013 sequel before his passing in 2019. Given how beloved Boyce was among the cast and crew, the theory has resonated strongly across social media even though nothing has been officially confirmed connecting the character’s fictional death to Boyce’s real-life passing.

That speculation is not entirely without precedent. Sandler has openly honored Boyce’s memory in his work before, most notably dedicating 2020’s ‘Hubie Halloween’ to him with an on-screen tribute reading that he was gone way too soon, after Boyce had originally been cast to appear in that very film before his death.

Sandler’s grief following Boyce’s passing was well documented at the time, with the actor publicly mourning him as one of the nicest, most talented, and most decent kids around. Costars including Salma Hayek, who played Boyce’s on screen mother across both earlier films, also shared heartfelt tributes describing him as spirited, kind, and a genuine shining light both on set and off.

Whether or not ‘Grown Ups 3’ is directly referencing Boyce’s death within its story, his absence from the returning cast lineup is already notable in its own right. According to franchise tracking, this will mark the first installment not to feature the character of Keithie Feder in any capacity, a reality that only adds weight to fan theories connecting the film’s central loss to Boyce’s real-life legacy.

The returning cast is expected to include Adam Sandler as Lenny, David Spade as Marcus, Rob Schneider as Rob, Chris Rock as Kurt, and Kevin James as Eric, alongside Maria Bello, Salma Hayek, and Maya Rudolph reprising their roles as the group’s significant others. Filming has been gearing up to begin across multiple states before the production heads overseas to Europe for its central storyline.

For a franchise long associated with broad comedy and easygoing nostalgia, leaning into themes of grief and lasting friendship represents a meaningful evolution. If the emotional undertones fans are speculating about do turn out to be a tribute to Boyce, it would mark one of the more poignant moments in Sandler’s long collaborative history with this particular group of friends.
