‘GTA 6’ Extended Look Is Somehow Beating ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ on Letterboxd
Video game trailers don’t typically end up in the same conversation as prestige cinema, but this year that boundary has gotten a lot blurrier than anyone expected. A single piece of promotional footage has managed to crash a website built entirely for movie lovers, and the internet has fully embraced the absurdity of it.
That footage is ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look‘, the 27-minute deep dive Netflix released in collaboration with Rockstar Games ahead of the game’s November launch. Captured entirely from in-game footage on PlayStation 5, the special gives fans their most extensive glimpse yet at protagonists Jason and Lucia navigating the game’s fictional Vice City, following two previous trailers released over the past several years.

Because the footage streamed on Netflix, it made its way onto Letterboxd, the social platform dedicated to logging and rating films, and users have wasted no time treating it exactly like any other 2026 release. At the time of writing, ‘An Extended Look’ holds an average score of 4.2 out of five stars across more than 32,000 logged reviews, placing it at number 34 on the platform’s ranking of the year’s top releases so far.

That placement puts it ahead of some genuinely massive theatrical films from this year. Notably, it edges out ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘, one of the highest-grossing movies ever made, which sits at a 4.1 average, along with other 2026 releases like ‘The Invite’ starring Seth Rogen and Olivia Wilde.
Nearly 24,000 of the roughly 32,000 reviews gave ‘An Extended Look’ the maximum five-star rating, with many praising the visuals and the new protagonist duo driving the sequel’s narrative. That level of enthusiasm has turned what was originally a marketing rollout into a genuine cultural moment, with fans engaging with it as seriously as they would any prestige awards contender.

Not every review has played it entirely straight, though. Some users have leaned into the novelty of rating a video game trailer alongside actual films, poking fun at the format itself even while acknowledging the quality of what Rockstar delivered. One review captured that tension directly, joking that the “structure was a mess, narrative was vague and confusing” as if reviewing a traditional film, while separately admitting the gameplay itself “looked incredible.”
That mix of sincere praise and playful commentary has helped the entry stand out even further on a platform not typically associated with video game content at all. Given how unusual it already is to see a game trailer land inside the top fifty entries for an entire calendar year of film releases, the ranking has become something of a talking point in its own right, independent of how ‘GTA 6’ itself eventually performs once it actually launches.
With Rockstar continuing to build anticipation ahead of the game’s November 19 release, and reports suggesting the Netflix special could even expand into multiple episodes down the line, it’s clear this crossover between gaming and film culture is only getting started.
What do you think about GTA 6’s Extended Look ranking above major movies on Letterboxd?
