‘Gundam’ Just Confirmed a Brand New Anime With a New Trailer, and the Director Behind It Is Our Favourite

The Gundam franchise has spent the last few years proving it still has plenty of fuel left in the tank. Between fresh takes on classic timelines and ambitious spinoffs, Bandai Namco Filmworks has kept longtime fans and newcomers equally invested in where the mecha giant heads next.

That momentum was on full display this week as anime lovers gathered for a fresh wave of announcements out of San Diego Comic Con. Panels for beloved franchises packed the convention floor, and Gundam fans in particular had circled their calendars for what Bandai Namco Filmworks had been quietly teasing for weeks.

Now the wait is over. Bandai Namco Filmworks has officially unveiled ‘Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO,’ a brand new anime series directed by Kenji Kamiyama, the acclaimed filmmaker behind ‘Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex.’ The series anchors a larger multimedia push called the RG Project and is set to premiere in 2027.

According to the official announcement, the story unfolds in a completely new timeline with no ties to the Universal Century or Common Era settings longtime fans already know. Humanity reaches extraordinary prosperity after contact with a mysterious entity called the Autonomous Interstellar Object, only for that same discovery to unleash a self proliferating threat known as the Apocalypse.

Forced off Earth entirely, humanity rebuilds on the moon and across space colonies. Decades later, a war orphan named Ray Azumi becomes the designated pilot of Gundam ZERO, setting the entire saga into motion.

Kamiyama opened up about the creative journey behind building an original Gundam universe from scratch. He admitted that “I found myself wrestling with all sorts of questions” while trying to figure out what could replace familiar staples like the Earth Federation, in a statement Bandai Namco Filmworks shared alongside the announcement. He added that once he reminded himself he had been given a rare chance to build his own Gundam world, the creative excitement returned and ‘Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO’ began to take shape.

Ray Azumi is voiced by Takeo Otsuka, who called it “a tremendous honor to be part of a new entry in the Gundam series.” Otsuka also expressed excitement about the project unfolding across both anime and video games.

That second piece of the puzzle is ‘GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT,’ a high mobility action game set roughly 100 years after the anime within the same shared universe. Animation production falls to SOLA Animation, with original concept credit still resting with Yoshiyuki Tomino and Hajime Yatate, the creators who started it all decades ago.

The announcement lands at a moment when Gundam is arguably as culturally relevant as it has ever been. Recent entries like ‘Mobile Suit Gundam The Witch From Mercury’ and ‘Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX’ pulled in new audiences and reignited passionate online discussion, and ‘XARX-ZERO’ already seems poised to continue that streak.
