Rupert Grint is stepping into a very different chapter of his career, and he wants fans to be ready for it. The actor, best known for playing Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter films, says his new movie goes far away from the warm and playful image many people still connect with him.

His latest film, Nightborn, had its world premiere at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival on February 14. In Nightborn, Grint plays Jon, a new father who moves with his wife, Saga, to a quiet house in a remote Finnish forest.

What should be a peaceful new start quickly turns disturbing when it becomes clear that their newborn child is not what he seems. The film is a dark horror story directed by Hanna Bergholm and focuses heavily on fear, isolation, and the emotional strain of becoming a parent.

Speaking to Variety, Grint openly addressed the contrast between this role and his past work. He said it goes against the warmth of Ron, making it clear that this film is not meant to be comforting or nostalgic. The story includes intense scenes and unsettling ideas that may be difficult for some viewers, especially those who grew up watching him in Harry Potter.

This film also marks a return to movie theaters for Grint after a long break. His last major film release was more than ten years ago. During that time, he stayed busy with television projects, including the psychological series Servant, where he played a deeply troubled character over several seasons.

Grint has said he feels lucky that his early success gave him freedom later in life. The Harry Potter films allowed him to be careful about what roles he accepts. In the same interview, he admitted I’m very aware of that privilege, explaining that he does not feel pressure to work constantly and prefers projects that truly interest him.

Even though he has moved on creatively, Grint still looks back on his time in Harry Potter with affection. He recently showed support for the upcoming HBO television reboot of the franchise by sending a kind letter to the young actor chosen to play Ron Weasley. He has also said that meeting fans who grew up with the films is something he still values deeply.

Looking ahead, Grint plans to keep a slow and steady pace. He has shared that his goal is to take on about one meaningful project each year rather than chasing nonstop work. One of those projects is already underway.

He is currently filming a new version of Ebenezer A Christmas Carol, directed by Ti West. In the film, Grint plays Bob Cratchit opposite Johnny Depp, who appears as an unrecognizable and dark take on Ebenezer Scrooge. The movie is set for release on November 13 and promises a much darker mood than traditional holiday versions of the story.

As Rupert Grint continues to move away from the image of a cheerful young wizard, his recent choices show a clear direction. He seems drawn to strange stories, heavy emotions, and unusual characters.
