Hayley Atwell Gives an Interesting Update About Peggy and Doom’s Screentime in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Marvel’s ensemble movies have always thrived on unexpected pairings, but few upcoming reunions have generated as much curiosity as what’s brewing between two of the franchise’s most beloved legacy characters. Fans have spent months speculating about how far-reaching the connections in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ will actually go.

That speculation has only grown louder as more cast members return to roles once thought permanently closed. With Robert Downey Jr. stepping into the villainous shoes of Doctor Doom and Hayley Atwell reprising her role as Peggy Carter, the pairing of these two MCU veterans has become one of the film’s most talked-about points heading into release.

Now, Atwell herself has confirmed that the two characters will indeed share scenes together, offering fans their first real glimpse into what that dynamic looks like on screen. Speaking with Collider’s Steve Weintraub at San Diego Comic-Con following Marvel’s Hall H presentation, Atwell described the experience of acting opposite Downey’s new villain in surprisingly vivid detail.

According to Atwell, she deliberately chose not to ask many questions about Doctor Doom’s character while filming, largely because Downey’s performance did all the explaining on its own. She explained that the contrast between Downey’s demeanor on and off camera made the experience even more striking to witness firsthand.

She told Collider, “I didn’t ask, in part because his presence on set was so enigmatic as Doom. Robert, in between takes, he invites people to eat lunch with him, and he’s super open and fun and wants everyone to have a good time… But when he’s Doom, it’s so enigmatic. It’s so domineering that it’s really intimidating and very powerful.”

That kind of description adds an intriguing layer to how Downey has approached the role, suggesting a performance built on a stark divide between the actor’s natural warmth and the character’s commanding presence. For a villain positioned as one of Marvel Comics’ most formidable adversaries, that kind of on-set transformation seems fitting.

Atwell’s return as Peggy Carter carries its own layer of significance for longtime fans. The character first appeared in ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ before becoming a defining figure across multiple MCU projects, including her own spinoff series and a memorable send-off alongside Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Endgame’.

Her most recent appearance came as a variant version of the character in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, a role Atwell has previously described as far more limited than she had hoped. Her expanded presence in ‘Doomsday’ marks a clear step up in both scope and screen time compared to that brief cameo.

With Evans also confirmed to be returning in some capacity, fans have spent months trying to piece together exactly how these reunions fit into the film’s sprawling multiversal plot. Atwell’s comments offer one of the clearest hints yet that her character’s storyline will meaningfully intersect with Downey’s central antagonist.

As anticipation builds ahead of release, these kinds of firsthand accounts from the cast are proving to be some of the most valuable pieces of information fans have to go on. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ hits theaters on December 18.
