Hayley Atwell Reflects on What Peggy Carter’s Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Means for Fans of Steve and Peggy’s Love Story

Hayley Atwell has spent over a decade shaping one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most enduring romantic threads, playing Peggy Carter across multiple films, her own spinoff series, and eventually a bittersweet reunion with Steve Rogers in ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ That ending, which finally gave the couple their long-awaited dance together, felt like a fitting close to their story, especially once Chris Evans appeared to step away from the role entirely.

That assumption was upended at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where Marvel confirmed during its Hall H panel that both Evans and Atwell would be returning for ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ reuniting Steve and Peggy on screen once again. The announcement caught fans off guard given how definitively the characters’ story seemed to have concluded, and it quickly became one of the most talked-about reveals from Marvel’s massive panel that day.

Now, Atwell has opened up about what bringing Peggy back means to her personally, and why she believes fans have remained so attached to the character’s connection with Steve.

She said she thinks it speaks volumes about how committed fans have stayed to the enduring love story between Steve and Peggy, adding that returning in this way feels genuinely bittersweet and nostalgic, but ultimately comes down to giving fans exactly what they’ve wanted, according to TheWrap.

Speaking further about the character’s significance to the franchise, Atwell emphasized that Steve and Peggy’s relationship isn’t easily separated from either character individually, noting that she finds it genuinely touching how enduring their connection has remained across so many years of storytelling.

Atwell’s history with Peggy Carter stretches back to 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger,’ and has since expanded across ‘The Winter Soldier,’ the opening of ‘Ant-Man,’ her own two-season ‘Agent Carter’ series, and an emotional cameo in ‘Endgame.’

She’s also voiced and portrayed the alternate-universe Captain Carter variant, first introduced in ‘What If…?’ before appearing in live action in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,’ where that particular version of the character met a violent end at Wanda Maximoff’s hands.

Given that complicated history, fans have spent weeks speculating about exactly which version of Peggy will appear in ‘Doomsday,’ whether it’s the classic Agent Carter, the elderly Peggy from her ‘Endgame’ send-off, or another multiversal variant entirely. Atwell has been careful not to reveal specifics, but has hinted the character will appear in a notably different light than fans have previously seen, shaped by the film’s high stakes and existential scale.

Atwell’s comments about wanting each appearance as Peggy to feel meaningfully different rather than repetitive suggest her return isn’t simply a nostalgic cameo, but a continuation of the character’s ongoing arc.

That approach lines up with reports that ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ the film that closed out Steve and Peggy’s original story, is being rereleased in theaters on September 25, timing that appears deliberately designed to build anticipation ahead of ‘Doomsday’s’ December 18 release.

With Marvel bringing back both Evans and Atwell in the same stretch of months as that rerelease, the studio appears fully committed to reigniting fan investment in Steve and Peggy’s story before pushing it into unexpected new territory.
